Wood Stain & White Kitchen Table

About a week ago if you follow me on Twitter or Instagram,
You saw a sneak peek of this beautiful table that I worked
on with one of my best friends for her kitchen.
The table was a lot of work including lots of sanding, prepping,
painting, staining, distressing & sealing.
We needed to get it done in a hurry because her husband was
coming home from Afghanistan this past weekend.
{He came home yesterday & it was on of the most amazing homecomings
I have ever seen in my life… I am so happy he is home!}
So we got the table done in time for his homecoming & we had a lot of fun
working on it together. {I found out it’s a lot more fun painting with a friend!}
& now the table looks beautiful in their home….

The table & chairs before…

Well, we all know how bad I am at remembering “before” photos,
so here is the table after a lot of sanding & prepping.

 & here are the lovely chairs ready to get painted.

The chairs were painted my favorite white, Dove white, by Valspar…
& later they were lightly distressed for a shabby chic look.

 The base of the table was painted the dove white as well &
later lightly distressed. Please ignore our lovely little set up
in her backyard… we had no strategy, but we had a lot of fun!

The next step was staining the top of the table,
we used a dark walnut to really contrast with the white.

To seal the top we used water based polyurethane,
& voila.. the table and chairs were done!
I love the top of the table the most, look
at that beautiful pattern in the wood!

Sorry for the picture overload, but I seriously love how this
table & chairs turned out…

What do you guys think? Are you a fan of this table?
I would love to hear what you think about it!

A couple of anouncements here on Liz Marie Blog as well…
For a while now Google Friend Connect has been unavailable
here on Liz Marie blog. Kind of sad to see it go, but no fear!

The new way to follow is through “linky followers” which you can
see in the right sidebar here on the blog where it says “Follow Me”.

{Holy crap. That’s a lot of social networking sites!}

are all places you can ask me questions, & chat with me too.
I would love to hear from all of you!

  3. That table and chairs are stunning. I absolutely love the table top. The deep rich stain and the grain of the wood. I would have a table like this in my home any time!! Love it, love it, love it!!
    It sounds like you had a really good time working on it too, that’s just a bonus.

    • I completely agree with you! I think it would have been a shame to cover up the wood! Thank you so much for your comment & for being a lovely follower of my little blog :)

  4. Visiting over from Thrifty Decor Chick and the picture caught my eye. I have a similar dining room set that’s been in my family for years and years. I refinished in a similar way and just love it. Yours looks great!

  5. So crazy, this is almost my exact table and chairs painted the same way mine are, but I haven’t been brave enough to paint the chairs white (which usually isn’t a problem for me) and this may just be the kick I need. This looks AWESOME! I love all your stuff, I’ve been a follower for a while (often refer here for color inspiration) and this is top 5 one of my favorites. Awesome work!

  11. Wow! The table and chairs look amazing. I really like how you kept the top of the table stained, it really gives it something extra:) I’m just stopping over from the Blog Hop. Hope you can pop over and visit my site!

  12. I found your link from Ask Anna. But I have that exact. same. table! And I’ve been trying to decide how to paint &/or stain it. So this helps a lot. It looks great. Thanks for the little kick to the behind I obviously need to get that project started. :-)

  13. The table and chairs turned out beautifully. I really like the contrast of the white base and stained top on the table. So glad your friend’s husband was able to return home from Afghanistan.

  14. I refinished that exact same table (minus the chairs) and I did the apron and legs in a distressed white finish. It really made that beautiful carving pop! I also ordered a wood dye to stain the top, as oak does not take the dark stain like I wanted. I’ve had many people ask to buy it, and it’s one of my favorite pieces of I’ve redone.

  15. I love this. I really want to do the paint/stain combo with my dinette set but I don’t think the top of my table is real wood. :/ I can’t decide because it “feels” plastic-y but it seems too heavy to be plastic. I don’t know but I adore your makeover :)

  17. Hi Liz! Remember I wanted to do this to my pressback chairs I got for $10? Well now I have at last got a table, yippee! so I am ready to start but have never attempted anything like this! Obviously I have to sand it all and so forth but can I ask…did you use spray paint for the white?? And do you have to put some sort of finish/sealant on top? I think I have the table top sorted cos I just use a wood stain and then some minwax finishing product, but I wasn’t sure about the white painted bits! Now I have finally got the set I don’t want to ruin it! Thank you so much for your help.

  19. Gorgeous! I found the same table and chairs on craigslist for $50 after seeing your post. I have painted the base and chairs white, and an going to do a little typeography on the top to look like a clock and then stain over it with the walnut stain. I hope it turns out as good as yours! I used a spray gun w/air compresser to paint my base and chairs. I primed,sanded,painted 2 coats of Behr enamel. Did you lightly sand your final coat? Cause mine has a slight sand paper feel. And what did you seal your base and chairs with? Sorry for all the questions, i just want it to look as good as yours. Thanks
