Where to Find Furniture to Paint

PicMonkey Collage

Wondering where to find furniture to paint? One of FAQ’s is where I find my furniture
pieces and hardware for my furniture makeovers. It may seem simple,
but sometimes it can be overwhelming looking for furniture pieces,
so I wanted to make it really easy for you and give you a complete cheat
sheet on where to look for some project furniture of your own…

1. In no particular order, Goodwill or stores similar to Goodwill, are great places
to find furniture pieces at a low price to fix up. There prices vary at different
locations & so does the merchandise. My biggest advice for shopping Goodwill
is you need to be persistent in order to find good deals. Also you to find
the best deals, visit multiple locations within your area.

2. Craigslist is a great place to find some great furniture deals. With Craigslist you can simply
search furniture in your area and browse every piece of furniture or you can type in
specifically what you are looking for {i.e. Dresser, nightstand, exd} You can also narrow down
your search by price, listings with pictures, and more which makes it a lot easier.

3. Local yard sale websites & facebook pages. The area I live in has dozens of local yardsale
websites & facebook pages where people sell furniture and other items. To find these
websites you could search “{your city} yardsale website”  on google & do the same on facebook. On
these facebook pages you need to be very quick because when people post pictures of items
for sale, the great deals go very quickly. You can also put out “wanted” ads on these sites
along with craigslist listing items that you are looking for & the people with these
items can find you to sell to.

4. Garage sales & yard sales- If you like to wake up early these are great places to find
furniture pieces from people downsizing their hoard, or moving out. You can search for
garage sales in your area in the newspaper, your local yard sale websites
as talked about in #3, Craigslist, &  Yardsalesearch.com

5. Drive around neighborhoods in your area on or right before trash day. This may
sound funny, but I have found some awesome pieces on the side of the road!
I have got a brand new rocking chair, a couple of dressers, some great chairs, &
some other awesome finds! Now, before I take the items I always ask the homeowners
first. You could always just grab and go, but I feel better asking first.

6. Local antique stores. You can find great deals at your local antique, thrift, & consignment
stores. Each store is different & will be different in your area on prices, deals, & items, but where I live
I find great deals on furniture at flea markets, thrift stores, antique stores, & consignment
shops all around our area, again it’s hit or miss so you have to go often to find the great deals!
Also with all of these kinds of stores in your area, you will find which places carry
more furniture pieces, visit those ones often!

7. & last but certainly not least, get the word out to your family & friends
that you are looking for furniture pieces. Someone always knows
someone who is looking to sell or get rid of some furniture pieces. So,
just get the word out that you are looking! It can’t hurt! & you never
know what treasures you could end up with!

With all of these places, again, you need to be persistent, & you may
not find treasures every time {unless you are super lucky!} but
there will be amazing times where you find exactly what you want.
Where do you find furniture pieces at? I would love to hear where
you have found is the best places to score some awesome furniture finds!

  1. These are great tips!! Now that I just re-finished my mom’s sewing desk, I am in a furniture makeover kind of mood!! I stopped at Goodwill again yesterday, but left empty handed! Gonna keep checking though!

Problem is, I’m running out of places to put the furniture! LOL!

    • hahaha that is my BIGGEST PROBLEM! My garage is quite full most of the time, and one of our guest bedrooms always has extra furniture shoved in it… Thankful for an understanding husband! lol Seriously I loved that desk re-do of yours.. I’m glad you are on a painting kick!!!

  2. I have found some great things on the side of the road. Tables and chairs, it still blows me away that people get rid of chairs. I never seem to have enough! We’re running out of room for all my treasures!! Even my husband is getting in on it now! He just came home with a brand new chair and couch for his man cave! Great post, Liz.

    • That is amazing Lindsay!!!! Wow, want to go curb hunting in your neighborhood! hahaha I’m so happy that you have all these amazing finds!! I know.. sometimes I can’t believe the awesome things people throw away.. well you know what they say one mans trash… ;)

  3. Thank you so much. I enjoy our work as much as my morning coffee and that says a lot. Since we have been in our home, I have wanted to do the bedroom in all re-made/homemade pieces. One of my New Year Resolutions was to get into remaking furniture, you are an inspiration and wonderful help. Thanks again!

  5. Great post. I spot out the same places here too. I have scored a ton of great pieces off Craigslist. It is so sad some of the things people are giving away for nothing or tossing in the trash. If they only knew :)

Your post is great gal, I even pinned it, my first. You give such great projects and hints, so helpful, thanks much. Can only imagine how much time it takes to put the photos on and text with it. Great job.
I know I should look more at places you listed but get lazy about getting out of house, especially now with cold and snow, too nice inside. I did find a couple great things on Craigs’ list awhile ago but didn’t have any money at the time. Total bummer as it was a great little buffet and a hoosier. We’re on SS so only get paid once a month and there’s been 3 months of 5 weeks between paydays. You only get paid once a month also don’t you being a Marine’s wife?
    Happy Week

    • Thank you so much JaneEllen!!! That means so much to me :) And I hear you…when it’s super cold I just want to be cozy in my house! We actually get payed from him twice a month which is nice.. I’m sorry you have to wait so long! I know how long paydays can be annoying sometimes!! I hope you get to find some awesome treasures soon!! xx

  7. Such great advice. I found also that going to thrift stores in slightly depressed economically areas yields far better prices than those in nicer areas. Which doesn’t exactly sound PC, but it is true! You know how much I love roadside and dumpster finds too! I love that you ended with getting the word out to friends and family. I am definitely the gal people call when they are getting rid of stuff. Great post! -K

    • Thank you so much Karen!!! & I completely agree with you.. it’s very true about the price differences.. almost shocking sometimes! Thank you for your sweet comment :) xx

  8. We both frequent a lot of the same “yard sale sites” :)

  9. I love yard sales and thrift stores! I walked away from this really cool solid wood bookcase with all this intricate carving detail across the top . I kicked myself all the way home. I went back to the next day and it was gone:(. Must not have been meant to be! I never thought to search for a local yard sale website…I’m going to check that out!

    Christy

  10. Oooo Christy.. that is the worse!!!!!!! But I guess you are right, it just wasn’t meant to be. But I know that feeling, REGRET! I hope you have success on local yard sale websites!! I’m curious to know if they are in every area of the country. xx liz

  11. This is a pretty cool post. I do all of the above. ;) ha ha Would love to have you link this to my What to Do Weekends Party going on right now. Following you on Google+ and Facebook. Linda

  12. Thanks so much for the information, since I’m new to painting etc., it was very helpful !! Thanks, Linda

  13. I love freebies! I use Craigslist Free and Freecycle.org for most of my finds. I also drive around before trash day to see what good finds are out there! Its amazing what people toss out….and even more amazing is the transformation those pieces go through for a second life. Love your stuff. Its wonderful!

  14. Very true about thrift store $$ differences, depending on the area … the Goodwill stores in our area want WAY too much $$ for furniture and even half-decent items … vs stores in older / depressed neighborhoods that have the bargains. You have to keep looking and widen your hunts …
Some of the BEST things I’ve found were on the curbside before trash days … chests, all kinds of chairs, end tables, benches, headboards etc
Amazing but really SAD how lazy many Americans are … throwing perfectly GOOD wood furniture out for the trash man, instead of taking it to a charity shop or calling one to have it picked up ! How lazy can you be ??

I’v e just printed out your 7 places to find furniture article. I’ll be spending more time looking online for items. We love living out in country west of Grand Junction but it does limit how much hunting I can do for pieces people get rid of. The thrift stores in our area are so high for really cruddy pieces, I feel like asking them if they’re a big store or a thrift store. Other people do end up buying the items, not everybody can afford to do that. When I’d go to sell it I’d have to ask too much. I’ll have to find out when trash days are in the town closest to us, worth a shot to start out, t here are some higher end neighborhoods that might be worth the drive. Right now I’m working on redoing several pieces we’ve had to get some practice. Your tips articles are very helpful, thanks for sharing.
    Have a great weekend.

I enjoyed your article. We had roof/house damage from Hurricane Issac .We still aren’t living in our house:( The only thing that’s keeping me sain is the ideas for what it will look like …one day:? I’m creative and can’t wait to redo some of our furniture & get some new pieces. I can’t wait to get started! Thanks for some great ideas:)

  17. This is the sort of web website I like to see! Succinctly written, it’s nifty!

  18. Good day! I just want to give an enormous thumbs up for the nice info you
could have here on this post. I will probably be coming
back to your blog for extra soon.

  19. Where i live we have a store called “habitat for humanity” or restore store. I think its a recycle building supply/ remodel type place. Its a place people take their old or extra cabinets, windows, left over paint, and such after a remodel or build. The profit goes to help needy people better their homes.

  20. My husband and I always go to a Salvation Army near us. We keep an eye out for their 50% off sales which they have at least once a month, they always announce it on FB and so I know ahead of time and we go and sneak a peak the day before the sale. Also Habitat For Humanity Restores get good stuff at times and they are typically pretty good about having extra hardware.
Also keep an eye out for other charity thrift stores. We went to one today and we got a great chair for free because the guy had too much stuff and couldn’t store it all. We also got an AMAZING 1960s Zenith console stereo with record player that works perfectly, plus spare needles and parts. The only cosmetic flaw is that the finish has gotten dried out and is cracking on one side of the top. The guy had the piece forever and just needed to get rid of it so he offered it to us for free. Being a charity, we felt bad just taking it so we gave him the only cash we had which was $8
We had a great day! My husband is taking at least a week of time off in early August so we can refinish and transform everything!
