DIY Barstool Desk

I must preface this post by saying something before I introduce you to my new DIY barstool desk.  You may be confused by my color choice for the desk. Like ummmm Liz, the desk matches the walls. Well, this week those walls are changing! I have a painter {a very lovely friend of mine} coming to paint our house this week {living room, dining room, kitchen} So this desk was painted with those changes in mind. More updates on that later. I’m so excited for change in our home! For more updates on the behind the scenes of our updates be sure to follow me on Instagram {here} & Facebook {here}. & I will take better pictures of my desk when the walls are painted, but I just couldn’t resist showing you my new lovely little desk…

I started out by making one of our guest bedrooms my workspace. Over time I found that I hated being secluded into a bedroom while all of the action was happening out in our living room, I rarely used the office & the desk that we had just became a spot to set stuff on. So the office turned back into a guest bedroom & I was using the dining room table or the couch. One of my good friends recently gave me some barstools that she no longer wanted & I knew exactly what I wanted to do with them. My plan was to make a simple DIY desk with the barstools with some boards, screws, stain, & paint. I wanted a slim desk that would fit in front of our front window in our living room, so I could work with a view. This barstool desk was the perfect solution.

This little desk was quite simple to make. We measured out how long we wanted the desk & then placed a stool at each ending point. We cut our boards from Lowes to that exact length. We lined the boards up across the stools & attached using one screw on each end of the board for each board. After the boards were attached I painted the barstools frappe by valspar {You could choose to paint the stools beforehand} I stained the boards special walnut by Minwax.

What do you think of my little desk? We are thinking about adding shelves onto the sides, but for now this little guy is my new favorites spot in the house. I have been enjoying using it & it really is the most handy thing I have built in a while. You can see my desk chair makeover {here}. Do you have a desk in your home? Where is yours located? I’m loving my desk with a view out of the window. In fact I am sitting at my desk right now as I type this looking out at the rain. I can’t wait to show you updates on the painting of our living room, can you guess what color we will be going with? Be sure to find me on Facebook & Instagram for daily updates on our progress. I hope you have a great day! xx

  1. I love it! Did you have to cut the legs of the barstools at all? I guess it depends on the height of your chair. Very easy to make and I love it!

    • Hey Heather! I did not have to alter the stools in any way. They actually fit perfectly in the space and with the chair. It was kind of amazing haha. I hope this helps & thank you for your sweet comment!! xx

  2. Unique idea! Love it!

  3. It looks great! Now you just need to put a few boards across the stool braces and you’d have a couple of shelves to hold supplies or pretty items.

  4. Elizabeth says:

Great job. I love the desk.

  5. Omg I didn’t even notice it was made with barstools until I was halfway through the pictures! That is awesome, I love it! You are so creative and I blame you for being one of the people that has made me want to redo our whole house haha!

  6. I love it!…Looks terrific!…I may do something similar for one of my rooms…If I find the same stools as yours, I would use the cross braces on the stools to support 2 more shelves underneath on each side…The ones just under the top, would be perfect to put paper..and lower ones could have baskets or whatever…

  7. It looks so great!

  8. BEAUTIFUL! I can totally relate to wanting to work where the action is. I love your desk! The walnut stain is really pretty :)

  9. THIS IS AMAZING. I want to go make one today. And the background and overall design of your blog is to die for. So happy I found you via The Collective today! Can’t wait to follow!

  10. Great idea! Especially since everyone mostly has laptops, there is no need for such a deep desk. I bet this would even work with the round bar stools.

    • I agree, this desk is perfect for a laptop & any work you are working.. pretty much the perfect size. I think it would work with round barstools as well & it would give it a whole new look :)

  11. I really like it! So cool! will be moving to small flat soon, so probably will be looking for something like this! :)

  12. LeannBell says:

    Excuse for that I interfere

  13. can you please just come to nashville and do my house?!?!! I love this desk! I wanted something long and skinny for my sewing room but ended up more square, so it’s kinda bulky and out of place. I still haven’t gotten it figured out yet. But this would be so cute! you have the best ideas! i swear! does your brain ever stop?!?!!?

  14. This looks so cool girl ~ what a great idea!

  15. Ralinn says:

Love the desk. I’ve been looking for bar stools with the square top to do something like this. Haven’t been able to find any. Do you know where your friend found them?

  16. I love love love this! I need a friend with barstools they no longer want! Lol. Im working on tv trays right now… sigh. But we have great windows in the back room of the house. I would love a little set up like this and be able to watch my little boy playing in the backyard from it. Great inspiration and i cant wait to see the wall color!

  17. This is adorable – and very practical. I know I can get my hands on bar stools easy (perhaps even free on craiglist) and visit a local lumber store. This seems like just the project for some empty space I need filled with a purpose!

  18. You used stools! So smart, I had no idea until I read further in your post. Your desk turned out great and I’m excited to see the look of your new walls once you paint them!!! I also love your desk chair!

  26. I love this! So creative and a great repurpose! It’s so funny because a friend of mine gave me these EXACT same barstools a couple of weeks ago. Right now I’m using them as barstools, but I hope to replace them with something I love at some point (probably a long time from now). And when I do, I’ll have the perfect way to use these barstools. LOVE it!!
