DIY Wire Spool & Metal Tub Coffee Table

DIY wire spool & metal tub coffee table -
As many of you know I revealed out back patio makeover on the Home Depot website last week. & now after the reveal I’m going to break down everything that we did for the space. In the reveal post I mentioned we wanted to thrift everything & not spend much money to re-do this space. Well, when it came time to get a coffee table my head was spinning with ideas of things that we could do. While we were cleaning up our backyard I found this top of a wire spool & a lightbulb went off in my head to make a coffee table with it. My idea was to use a metal galvanized tub from Tractor Supply Company  for the base of the coffee table & place the wooden spool on top of the tub. With some wood stain, the spool top, and the galvanized tub we had a simple lovely coffee table for our back patio.

This spool top had been sitting in our backyard for over a year now & wasn’t in the best shape. We got our wire spool top from a local company. If you are looking for a wire spool {the whole thing or just the top} I would ask local electric/hardware companies to see if they have one they can give you. We used our electric sander to make an even surface. We also sprayed the piece with ortho bug spray to make sure if there were any bugs on this piece that they were all dead. After the piece was cleaned and sanded I stained the spool top with Minwax special walnut. After it was dry I took the sander to the piece again to give it an aged & distressed look. When it was done we simply set the spool top on to of the metal tub. Since the spool top is so heavy we didn’t need to use any adhesive to hold it on the tub. If you choose too you could use screws to hold the spool on top, but it wasn’t necessary in our case.

  1. I LOVE this! I see myself attempting to make one in the future. Thanks.

  2. I am in LOVE with this outdoor living space! The canopy, the table, the chairs… all of it! This would be perfect for our patio without sacrificing our budget! Thanks for the inspiration!

    • Thank you so so much Lauren!! & you are so very welcome for the inspiration. Yes, everything I do I try to do on a budget and thrift/DIY what I can. It’s more fun & it’s always fun saving money ;) xx

  3. Love, Love, Love!!

I’m going to be a total copy cat! For 1, I have that exact same canopy and we love it! (Except our “canopy” was ripped to shreds in a hail storm that came through about a month ago, and we still need to replace it.) And 2, I have about 4 of those wire spools in the backyard! I’m so excited now, Thank you so much for sharing this!!

    • Yay!!!! I’m so glad :) That makes me happy. & I’m sorry about your canopy!! I hope that doesn’t happen to ours… I will no to be cautious now if they say hail is coming. Weird! Let me know when you make the table… I would love to see it!! xx

  4. Beautiful, your patio looks so inviting. I want to curl up there with a good book and a glass of wine.

Is it super hot and muggy where you live? Phewy is it ever here in western CO. We have the monsoon season so our humidity is up more than usual, phewy again. I need to get sheets off the line but it’s so hot I’m procrastinating. Can wait too late tho cause then the darned skeeters are waiting in the grass for me. I can’t use bug stuff much as I’m allergic to it. I just read somewhere natural things to use instead, but forgotten, darn it.
I so love your patio coffee table, great size. Envy you the cover on patio also. I’ll have to go ask if we can get a spool like that, would love to have one.
Your patio looks so nice, cozy, welcoming. Can imagine it’s really nice to sit out to have cool drink or even a meal out there.
We have the lumber for a pergola but hubs can’t put it up anymore due to his high blood pressure and meds he takes. He had a stroke about 3 1/2 yrs ago and part of his brain is incognito, won’t reawaken so he has hard time figuring out how to do some things. His left leg and arm/hand were affected also.
I can’t do it either so we’re sitting with a very hot back deck which faces west, very hot in afternoon. We have some kind of cloth we bought to cover part of the pergola to help make it cooler close to house. We can’t put up one of the kind of covers you have as hubs thinks it won’t last. I mean tornado type wind. Our door handle gets so hot I can’t touch it to get back in house. Yeah, good old western CO. Enjoy your wonderful on the ground patio. Happy summer also

    • I would never imagine that CO was hot and muggy like that Jane Ellen!! Wow, I have always wanted to visit CO…. Someday :) Maybe not during monsoon season so I don’t have to be too hot ;) I’m so sorry about your husbands stroke, but so very thankful for you that he is still here… I have had family member who have had strokes and thankfully they healed from it for the most part. Such a scary thing! Makes me thankful for good health for those family members everyday. I for sure do not go out there on super hot days, it’s not for me. But I can’t wait for the fall when it’s nice and cool out and I can go out there and read and enjoy the weather. I hope you guys are having a great summer & don’t over-do it!!! :) xx Liz Marie

  13. We recently acquired a large spool and were thinking of making a table for the patio. I love how you added the tub to the bottom…such a fabulous idea!

  14. Love ..Love this …. Awesome idea, if the tub were up right the it could be used for storage just a thought……. The space is just beautiful..!!!
I am so looking forward to your next project….

  15. I love the look of your patio. I just moved into an old house with tons of work to do. A real “fixer-upper” starting with having to replace the HVAC and all the wiring from vandalism. The master just had cement floor and next week I am having all the carpets ripped out ( so yucky). I would rather live with a cement floor for awhile until I can afford to put in new hardwoods or laminate. The house I moved from had a covered patio and I got spoiled, sitting there in the mornings with my coke and watching the dogs play in the yard. I was waiting until end of season to buy a canopy like yours. The whole look is just what I want. I am having a new roof put on as will so I wait for that until all the roof work is done.
So much fun! I have painted the master ( a soft lavender ) and the large living room (Ocean aqua) which both have cathedral ceilings and the Breakfast soft yellow butter. My next room is the dining room which I started in a beautiful color called Tranquility. I ran out of paint as I also was using it in the hall to the bedrooms.
Again , I love your covered patio. Thank you for sharing.
