This May Shock You…

Some of you may freak out when you read this. Remember last November when we re-did our master bedroom & it looked like this…

Well, it doesn’t look like that anymore. Let’s back it up a little bit. As many of you know that we have another house in Michigan that you can read about {here} & we will be moving to Michigan in about a year. Well, that means we need to put our current house here in North Carolina up for sale. After thinking about it and talking about it, Mr. LMB & I have decided that our master bedroom had to change. Let’s call it a “make under”. We thought that the current space was to taste specific & that to sell our home we should go with more of a neutral look to please a larger amount of people. So this past weekend I just started taking things down off the walls, and emptying the room. We hadn’t planned on starting so soon, but once I get an idea in my head I just go with it. I even stripped the bedding. The only thing that was left standing was the massive wood planked headboard, a few wall hangers, & the curtains…

I must have started a trend because Mr. LMB came in behind me and took some action on the wood planked wall…

Now we have a wonderful blank slate. Next step touch up paint & coming up with a game plan for the room. We actually do not have a very specific plan for this room. We have a very simple broad view of the direction we will be going, but guess what? You get to be on the journey of this room makeover with us & I may need your help with a few decisions too. What do you think? Do you think we are crazy? Crazy good or crazy bad? haha don’t answer that. But really. What are you thoughts about the room? What do you think we should do?

  1. When you sell your home you have to make it simple. I think you done the best thing but the room did look pretty before. Keep it up, nothing worse than having a house that won’t sell!

  2. Honestly, the only things I would have done would be to take down the headboard,( to make it less rustic, I love the headboard) and change out the ceiling fan. I loved that room!

  3. Star Fulcher says:

I have been toying with changing our master bedroom as well. I am wanting to do a light to medium grey color and accent it with white and another color. I like the idea of being able to change up the other color. Red, pink, yellow, etc. Its neutral but also in style right now with the grey walls.

  4. Oh. My. Goodness!!! Your poor room! Haha! It was so beautiful! But I agree that you need to de-personalize your home when you’re trying to sell it. I’m sure you’ll make it beautiful again even if it has to be a bit more neutral. :)

  5. when u stage s bedroom you want to go with a “hotel spa” vibe. that way when people come look they will feel like wow if i buy this house i will be so relaxed and comfortable. this is what i did when i sold my house and i got exactly my asking price!

  6. Auntie Lulu says:

You did GOOD in following your instincts & common sense my lovely niece!! With all the moving around I have done it is correct that a house needs to be fairly neutral and uncluttered or the buyer can’t place themselves and their lovely possessions in the living space. Painted walls do help, though, for a potential buyer to get their creative juices flowing as they imagine making a house their home. Can’t wait to see what you do with this bedroom :^)

  7. Kudos for planning ahead! Last thing you need on top of a big move and selling your home is trying to get it listing ready in a pinch! Good call on getting started early! I’m a weee bit sad that you had to dismantle such a beautiful room though :(

  8. Oh my goodness! You guys must be busy, busy! Can’t wait to see how you design the new room!!

  9. I loved your room but totally understand the need for the change and agree that you’re doing a smart thing by simplifying things in there for resale! Can’t wait to see what you come up with.

  10. You totally did the right thing to sell your house…but MAN! SO sad to see that gorgeous headboard go. :) I’m sure you’ll dream up something so fantastic and gorgeous for the new blank slate, and I can’t wait to read about it!

    XO Kylie

  11. OMG. I had the same duvet on my bed like three point two seconds after you posted your reveal!!! Sad to see it go, but I understand the need to tone down the personality for potential buyers. Good luck!!

  12. OMG It looks naked!!!! And not like you at all. But I know it will be wonderful no matter what you do with it. Can’t wait to see!

  13. That is crazy but I totally understand why you did it! Best of luck selling.

  14. I loved your room before, however we are planning on selling soon too and I know all too well about keeping the rooms in a neutral scheme to keep it open for more buyers!! Good luck selling!

  15. Marie, I am a new follower of yours. I think you made the right decision as well! I live in Utah and often go to the Parade of Homes yearly with my mother. The thing that makes those homes beautiful is the simple staging that goes on. Such as a nursery with a simple crib, a picture, and changing table and rug. Or a Master bedroom with luxurious bedding, puddled curtains, and a pretty light fixture. The ones we dislike the most or the ones with lots of funky colors like turquoise and yellow with chevron (trendy and beautiful I know) but often is not everyone’s style and can make it feel like you can’t picture it as your own. Plus I would have to change everything. I think you are heading in the right direction, maybe do a fresh coat of light beige, grey, or greige with pretty simple white bedding and hardly any furniture and it will sell fast. Hope this helps!

  16. Personally, I love the plank wall… may have even bargained for it if I were making an offer – but otherwise think it’s smart to simplify before selling so potential buyers can envision themselves living there. :)

  17. ohmygod my heart is crying!! First off – of course you have to do what you have to do to sell the house

but rest assured Liz Marie that this room gave me so so so much inspiration to redo our bedroom and go a little crazy in ideas. so thank you!! your effort wasnt wasted and I bet you enjoyed sleeping in that perfect perfect room for the time it lasted!

  18. You bedroom was so beautiful! That said, yep, neutral colors and as another comment said, Spa feel. A lot of white bedding with neutral colors added will let people see their own furnishings in the space.

  19. I think it is really smart to neutralize the room to sell the house.

For a master bedroom, Why not try a spa kind of feel? Everyone wants to feel like their bedroom will be a retreat. For the headboard, I’d do one of those simple fabric covered headboards. They aren’t expensive to do, it looks good and it won’t take a lot of time and energy since this really is your first phase of staging.

This will be kind of fun to figure out what will appeal to the most buyers!

  20. Yea! Welcome (almost) to my home state! Can’t wait to have such an awesome blogger in Michigan!

  21. Smart move! Gorgeous bedroom and taste that will no doubt join you in Michigan! Where o’ where did you get that rug (navy and cream) and what about the ottomon? Love all that you had in the space with the mix of masculine colors & gold; they hit the spot for a dreamy, cozy cabin feel.

  22. We’re going through the EXACT same thing in our house! We’re remodeling the house, but remodeling it so we can sell it a little easier. It’s an interesting world to live in, designing the home with a strange in mind instead of ourselves.

  23. I totally understand why you are doing it, but gosh I loved your bedroom!

  24. I would put a small chandelier on the ceiling, put the lower dresser in storage and replace it with a pretty small side table, and put a small decorative bench at the foot of the bed for seating, leaving the bed with a small side table on either side with lamps and the one taller dresser. I would also add a big decorative mirror on the wall above the bed.

  1. [...] would be appealing to potential buyers. Step one of our bedroom makeover was emptying out the room {You can see the details about that post here} The second step to the room makeover is creating a new & very simple headboard for the room [...]
