How To Stop Motion Sickness When Traveling

Ok, I have to start out by saying that today is such a weird post for me, but I feel it’s something I must share. I’m not sure if I’ve ever mentioned it on here, but I get motion sickness very easily. Like annoyingly easy. Cars, boats, planes, rollercoasters, and so on… it all causes me nausea. It sucks. A few weeks ago when I traveled to North Carolina it hit me like a ton of bricks on the way in & it stuck with me for a few days… I did everything wrong on that trip. I didn’t follow any of my golden rules & immediately regretted it all. So, fast forward to this week when I’m traveling to North Carolina again I decided to stick to my golden rules & test out my theory of how I keep my nausea subdued & thank goodness… it worked! I was able to enjoy my trip to the crystal coast of North Carolina this weekend with Hunter Fan Company while flying in a plane, boating, & long drives in the car. I know I’m not the only one who struggles with this so I couldn’t keep these tips to myself. I know traveling can cause anxiety & nausea can ruin a perfectly good trip so I hope these tips help some of you who struggle with this like I do…

-Hydrate- I always make this mistake. I forget to drink water for days. I know, it’s terrible & a completely bad habit of a working woman who is always on the go. I’ll remember to drink a coffee, but forget the water.. go figure. I have found in my short 29 year that water can cure just about anything. Being hydrated before a flight makes your body feel so much better & really keeps those nauseous inducing headaches away.

-Don’t overeat. For my anxious flyers like me out there this is a no brainer. I’m always so nervous I can’t eat before a flight, but you need to eat a little something. Hydrate and eat some healthy protein filled snacks before a flight so your body can work properly. Carry snacks with you to nibble on during the flight when you start feeling nauseous [salty snacks work great]. My go to is a water bottle & some salted peanuts. Simple but does the job.

-Sea bands. These little guys are a life saver. Not the most fashion forward, but the claim on the sea bands is that you wear them on your wrist and the little ball that is attached to the band hits a pressure point in your wrist that helps keep nausea at bay. You can see them & read more about them [HERE] Honestly I don’t know if it’s a placebo affect, but these little babies actually work for me after I doubted them. I’ve used them many times & have been impressed that they work. Some of those times when I’m already nauseous and some when I’m preparing for things like plane or boat travel. You can find them [HERE] or at your local Target or pharmacy.

-gum. I believe it’s your inner ear that causes nausea and motion sickness, at least that’s what I have read as someone who as suffered from nausea and motion sickness my whole life. & when your ears pop on plains [that’s what I call it at least] it can set your head into total spinning mode. So, pop some gum in your mouth for your whole flight to keep your jaw moving so that your ears remain normal for the flight. If the gum isn’t working & my ears clog I usually try opening my mouth really wide over and over or yawning & that usually does the trick.

-Bonine/ Dramamine. I’m going to preface this one with saying it’s my least favorite one, but I know these medicines work different for everyone. These are anti-nausea medicines [affiliate links HERE & HERE] that when taken an hour before the activity that might make you nauseous can really keep all those feelings away. The only problem for me is that this one makes me have terrible dry mouth & even the non-drowsy makes me so tired that I feel sick. BUT I know these work for other people so I wanted to include it in this list as an option. I still keep these on me when traveling just in case, but not my go-to right away unless all else fails. & if I had to pick one over the other I would pick Bonine for sure.

-Ibuprofen. Nausea and headaches seem to go hand in hand for me when traveling. Once a headache comes on I’m nauseous so Ibuprofen is my go to for headaches because it doesn’t upset my stomach and makes those annoying little headaches go away so there isn’t any unnecessary nausea.

-Pepto. This is my new favorite one. I always thought pepto was for when you had the flu, but seriously the instant I start feeling a nauseous belly coming on I take pepto and it’s been a miracle worker for me. I prefer the chewable tablets [HERE], but it does come in a liquid form as well. Again, medicines work different for everyone, but this one has been a wonderful friend of mine lately when flying.

-Don’t read. Listen to books/podcast/movies. Really just don’t look at a screen. Funny story, I’m actually typing this to you while on the plane home right now & I’m actually thinking I should wrap it up because I’m feeling a little dizzy looking at the screen. This one is probably different for everyone, but I feel like it’s. a safer option for me to not read.

-close your eyes and try to get some zzz’s- This one is on and off for me as well, but sometimes I feel like it’s best for me to just sleep on the plane to pass the time, not think about the flight, calm my nerves, and I think that being rested is best for keeping nausea away. The only side note to this is I don’t know about you, but sometimes naps can make me nauseas or brain on neck cramps etc. so this one sometimes backfires, but hey… at least you gots some shut eye!

-Talk It Out. On the last plane I was on before this one it was so turbulent & it was one of those prop planes where I kept losing my stomach. It could have been bad, but I met the sweetest lady who sat next to me and we got into a really deep conversation & I was so focused on her that when I started to feel sick it almost went away because I didn’t start to panic about feeling sick. Focusing on conversation, music, or anything other than your nausea can truly help get rid of that “nausea panic” that always makes it worse.

-Breathe. Don’t forget to breathe & relax. Sometimes I get so worked up about my travel plans and the anxiety just brings on tons of nausea which makes me so mad because the nausea starts before we even take off. So, breathe, relax, & try not to think about the travel or what might happen.

Now with doing all this I still felt moments of dizziness like when I was climbing up 207 steps up a spiral staircase in the lighthouse this weekend or when I was on a really rough flight on a prop plane, BUT it wasn’t unbearable and I felt like I was in control of it which is very important. I hope some of these tips help you guys & for all my nauseous travelers, you are not alone! If you have any helpful tips please share them below for me & everyone else who struggles with this to read. I will be doing a whole re-cap of my trip soon, but I had to quick share all this with you guys today. Thank you SO MUCH for visiting my little blog today & safe travels!

Some anti-nausea meds I love & want to try…

Oil Pulling – How I Whiten My Teeth

How oil pulling has changed my beauty routine & the power of coconut oil.. a must pin! Whiter teeth the natural way along with so many other benefits from oil pulling like cavity & headache prevention, releasing toxins from the body, & more!
You know me, I rarely come on here and share my beauty & health tips, but when I do it’s because I love it & it works for me. I shared before how I cured my acne and problematic skin [here] & I can’t tell you how many emails, comments, & people I meet in public that tell me that it saved their skin too. Acne is no fun & being able to take care of it naturally is amazing. If you struggle with your skin for sure check that post out. Today I wanted to share something with you I have been doing for over a year now. I don’t do it everyday simply because I forget, but it really has benefited me in many ways. It’s call oil pulling & many of you may have heard of it before. It’s where you take a tablespoon of coconut oil & you swish it in your mouth [pulling between your teeth] for 20 minutes before spitting it out when you are done & it helps clean your mouth among other things. Strange right?

Coconut oil is antibacterial, antiviral, antimicrobial, & anti-fungal. These things are great for your oral health of course among other things, but today we are only talking about oil pulling. Coconut oil detoxifies your mouth & makes it a clean environment which effects your overall health because you are not swallowing bacteria & other things that are bad for your health. I am not a scientist or a doctor, but did a lot of research before I started doing this & I suggest you do to before you start. Just google oil pulling & you will find some great articles from people far smarter than me.

Some benefits of oil pulling:

-whitens teeth
-prevents cavities
-TMJ relief
-soothes throat dryness
-freshens breath
-alleviates headache
-strengthens teeth & gums
-increases energy
-draws out toxins
-heals skin issues
-aids hormonal changes
-heals cracked lips
-helps alleviate sinus congestion
-helps detox the body

I’ve even heard it can help cure hangovers. I mean, what doesn’t coconut oil do? If you have read my skincare post you also know I wash my face with coconut oil which I LOVE. Those anti- [….] properties really come into play again there. The goal in skincare & oral care? kill all the germs while healing & strengthening at the same time. That’s what coconut oil does.

So what’s my experience? I’m obsessed.  I typically oil pull while getting ready & doing my hair, in the shower, & actually I oil pulled today while taking a few photos for the blog. They say to do it right away in the morning, but that doesn’t always work for me. I suggest doing it while you are doing a little task to help pass the time quicker. I use about a tablespoon of coconut oil I oil pull for as long as I can [20 minutes is suggested] & then I brush my teeth right after. My mouth feels so clean after & I can for sure tell a difference in how clean & fresh my mouth is. My teeth aren’t the whitest because of my love for cherry coke, coffee, & tea, but coconut oil for sure helps keep them whiter & I know I can attribute it to the oil pulling. My skin is better when I oil pull & I feel better. Sometimes I wonder if it’s correlated, but I do notice a difference when I do it more regularly. I can’t explain how it works, but my review is that I’m going to keep doing it! I typically get my coconut oil from Marshalls which I always find it there for a great price. & for those of you not caring what I’m talking about today & just want to know where everything in the photo is from.. it’s all marshals [you know that store is my jam] & the little tree guys are Ikea of course. The ONLY negative I have experienced from oil pulling? Sometimes the texture can get to me. I’m not always in the mood to oil pull because it does have a texture & a taste, but this rarely happens & is different for everyone, but worth sharing for sure.

Not the whitest teeth in America, but much whiter than they would be without the coconut oil because of my coffee & tea addiction. You can also mix in essential oils in with your coconut oil before you oil pull. I’ve never done this, but I’ve heard it’s great & it’s worth a try if you have some essential oils laying around! Today’s post was so different than my usual, but I’ve been meaning to share this little ritual of mine for a while. I just like it so much that I couldn’t keep it a secret. Do you oil pull? What is your experience with it? I would love to hear from you!! Let me know in the comments below, find me on Facebook, & chat with me on Instagram. As always, thank you so much for stopping by my little blog & sharing it with your friends it means so much. xx

DIY Sea Salt and Sugar Scrub

DIY sea salt & sugar Hand & body scrub - Easy to make & a must for the summer months to keep in the shower to remove rough & dry skin. Gives you the silkiest glowing skin ever!

It’s that time of year again where I want to use self tanner to look sun kissed all while playing it safe & staying out of the sun & the tanning beds. If you are a self tanner user {I’m loving the St. Tropez self tanner, what about you?} , you know that exfoliating before applying is the number one rule. I can never find a scrub that is exfoliating enough for my liking that is the price I want to pay so I started making my own DIY sea salt and sugar scrub & I happened to make a fresh batch this weekend so I wanted to share my recipe with you. It’s so easy to make, smells & feels amazing, it’s moisturizing, & husband approved too!

DIY sea salt & sugar Hand & body scrub - Easy to make & a must for the summer months to keep in the shower to remove rough & dry skin. Gives you the silkiest glowing skin ever!

ok. So the thing about this hand & body scrub is that it’s not a specific scientific recipe. It’s completely preference. You can choose your ingredients by what your specific needs are.  I wanted my scrub to be a little more rough to remove the long hot summer days & the dead & dry skin so I decided to use sea salt, raw sugar, brown sugar, coconut oil, & for an extra bonus this time I added some Dawn with olay hand renewal cream. I used the lavender scent so the scrub has a calming aroma which makes it perfect to use in the shower after a long hot day. I made my scrub in a small mason jar, but you can use any container you wish. I simply mixed all the ingredients in the mason jar until I was happy with the texture. On this particular batch I chose to have it a little runnier with more of the Dawn/olay soap. If you choose to not use the soap & use the coconut oil {you can use olive oil too!} it will be less runny & more of a firm texture. I chose to use the soap not only for the scent, but also so it would be a great cleanser in the shower. You can add & subtract ingredients to fit your needs. I change up the recipe every time I make it & that’s the best part about this DIY scrub! This particular recipe gives you the smoothest silkiest glowing skin ever. Perfect for summer when we are showing more skin!

Super easy DIY sea salt & sugar scrub... a wonderful treat for your skin that scrubs away dead skin while moisturizing!
Keep a jar in the shower & by your sink & I guarantee you will become addicted to using it. The mason jars & tags are both from good old Target, but you can use what you have on hand. All of the other ingredients can be found at any grocery & you probably have most of them in your pantry already. Have you made a DIY scrub before? What did you use? I would love to hear your recipe & what works for you. I’m down for trying new DIY scrubs & I think if you start making them now, you will become addicted too. DIY Honey Cinnamon Nutmeg Face Mask

DIY honey cinnamon nutmeg face mask - A natural face mask that brightens skin, clears breakouts, & evens out skin tone. A must try for any skin issues!!

I recently shared my natural skin care routine that cured my face from having chronic breakouts to being perfectly clear. Nothing ever helped my skin until I went all natural. My skin is generally very clear since I started the natural skincare routine, but once in a while I will get a blemish {one just popped up this morning in fact. Yay!} So I made my favorite skin clearing mask & I decided to quickly share it with you. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s life changing. It helps moisturize, clear blemishes, even skin tone, exfoliate, brighten your complexion, & so much more! I usually try to do this mask once a week, but I tend to do it when I feel like my skin needs some love. It’s a mini DIY facial that is easy to make & you most likely have all the ingredients in your house! Here is the DIY honey cinnamon nutmeg face mask that I have loved for so long.

DIY honey cinnamon nutmeg face mask - A natural face mask that brightens skin, clears breakouts, & evens out skin tone. A must try for any skin issues!!
First let’s talk about why this mask is so amazing. It has honey which is a humectant, which is a natural moisturizing agent. Honey is also naturally antibacterial, so it’s great for acne treatment and prevention. Cinnamon is an antiseptic which will help reduce the bacteria on the surface of your skin to aid in the prevention of pimples and even help dry out existing pimples. It also stimulates and revitalizes the skin by drawing blood, oxygen and nutrients to the surface of your skin, leaving your skin healthy & glowing. Nutmeg exfoliates the skin which in turn reduces blemishes & the look of blemishes. The nutmeg also helps reduce those pesky blackheads… yuck! Try not to lick your own face because this mask smells divine!

Making this mask is super easy & customizable for your skin needs.  Gather your honey, nutmeg, cinnamon, & you can even add other items like oatmeal or turmeric if you feel like getting crazy.  start with one tsp of nutmeg & one tsp of cinnamon. These measurements do not have to be precise & are only there for a guideline. After that mix in two tablespoons of honey & stir it up!

I usually wear the mask for about 2o  minutes. Sometimes more & sometimes less. You can do what you feel comfortable with. I have never felt any tingling or burning, but if you do and it’s uncomfortable I would rinse off & maybe this mask isn’t for you. Have you tried this mask before? What do you think of it? Have you had good results with it? Let me know in the comments below, find me on Facebook, or chat with me on Instagram.

Natural Skin Care Routine – How I Healed My Skin!

How I healed my skin the natural way!

So I will be the first one to admit that I don’t have perfect skin { Even though lately it feels pretty perfect compared to what it was.} I’ve been on this journey for a few years trying to clear up persistent breakouts & I am not lying when I say that I have tried EVERYTHING. I mean everything. I am finally at a point in my journey where I have found a routine that finally works for me & has kept my skin super clear & healthy. I know that I can’t be the only one who has struggled with hormonal breakouts & oily skin so I wanted to share what has worked for me in hopes that it can help someone else as well. Remember that I am not a dermatologist so I have to say do your own research & your own caution when changing up your skin routine. I just have to say when I went natural with my skin, my skin started loving me back & I finally got the results I had been wanting for so long.

Here’s a little back story about my skin. When I got into my twenties I started noticing lots hormonal breakouts on my jaw line & chin area. My skin became very oily & the breakouts wouldn’t stop. Ummmm seriously? Wasn’t this supposed to happen when I was a teenager? Apparently not. So forever I was using makeup wipes & products with harsh chemicals in them. My skin was just getting worse, I had large sore breakouts & they would never really go away. I would use makeup & concealer to cover it up, but you can still see bumps through makeup & if you know that the breakout is there you become self conscious & it can effect you emotionally. I would have maybe a week with clear skin & then another large breakout would start again. I was thinking that I was just stuck. This was my skin and I had to deal with it. I had prescriptions, every face wash on the market, & even expensive tools Until one day when I decided to go mostly natural for a while & see what that would do. I mean it couldn’t hurt right?

First things first I cut out the makeup wipes. They were causing my sensitive skin nothing but irritation and adding unnecessary scents & chemicals causing breakouts. In place of the makeup wipes, step one of my skin care routine is to use coconut oil & a wash cloth with warm water. Coconut oil is naturally antibacterial so it combats all of the bacteria that can be on your face from your long day. I use ogranic coconut oil {you can find it practically anywhere!} I rub a tiny bit all over my face & then with a wash cloth that is damp with warm water I wipe all of it off. This step removes almost 100% of the makeup & my face feels so soft and clean. Coconut oil has also been known to shrink pores, fix fine lines, & it’s a seriously amazing moisturizer. After a week of cutting out the makeup wipes I noticed that my skin was no longer red & irritated. I think coconut oil is one of the biggest factors that has made my skin better these days.

Second step changes from day to day depending on what I feel like. I’m usually only wearing tinted moisturizer these days so sometimes I will repeat step one & then move on to step three. But, if I’m feeling a little dirtier or that my skin needs some more love I will use the Pacifica sea foam complete facewash which is sulfate free & super gentle. I love the smell of this stuff & it foams up so nicely that I feel like it makes my skin so clean & fresh. If you are looking for a gentle cleanser I for sure recommend this one.

The third step in my nightly skin care routine is Thayers alcohol-free Rose petal witch hazel {I purchased mine at GNC}. This toner is seriously so gentle & one of the only ones I have ever used that calms my skin down. It refreshes, shrinks pores, & is a great last step that ensures I have removed everything off of my face. It has aloe & vitamin E so it soothes my skin perfectly & preps it for moisturizer.

& last but not least I moisturize with grape seed oil { I purchased mine at GNC}. I place a tiny bit in the palm of my hand & use it all over my face. Grape seed oil has anti-oxidents & anti-inflammatory properties that really combat any breakouts & soothe the skin as well. It also tightens pores which also helps prevent further breakouts. Grape seed oil is great for people with oily skin. You may think you need to dry your skin out if you have oily skin, but that only causes your skin to think that it needs to produce more oil. Therefore you will just be an oily mess. So after washing your face add a great moisturizer to your routine. The grape seed oil has changed my life. I have noticed fading of my scars, smaller pores, less breakouts & my skin is not a hot oily mess anymore like it once was.

For when I do get a breakout or a pimple I have been using tea tree oil {mine is from the Body Shop}. Tea tree oil is a great alternative to other topical acne creams with lots of harsh chemicals. for my dry lips I have been loving this hemp oil chapstick that I got in my Birchbox last month. & for eye cream when I’m feeling like I need it I use all about eyes from Clinique.  For nights when I want to put a mask on my face or I feel a breakout coming I will make a mask with honey, nutmeg, & cinnamon. All the ingredients combat bacteria, help with scarring, fight breakouts, & much more. The mask is amazing. Try it 😉

In the morning I use oatmeal to wash my face. Don’t laugh. It seriously works! Oatmeal contains this scientific word called saponins which is known for it’s cleansing properties. Oatmeal also contains lots of vitamin E & is recommended for those with sensitive skin {i.e. my sensitive acne prone oily skin} To cleanse with the oatmeal I put a tiny bit in my palm & run hot water over the oatmeal to soften it. I then use it as a scrub all over my face and rinse with warm water. You can blend the oatmeal so it becomes finer, but usually I just use the whole oats that I store in a small container in our bathroom. I seriously just use regular oats, I mean any brand out of the grocery store.

After I cleanse with the oatmeal in the morning I use the Thayers alcohol-free rose bud witch hazel as a toner with a cotton ball all over my face just like I do at night. For day lotion these days I am OBSESSED with boots number 7 beautiful skin day cream for normal/oily. It is non-pore blocking & it has zinc in it which controls oil. I seriously don’t know if I ever will switch from this lotion. If you have oily skin I would try this!

I should also add that I have tried to add more water to my diet & cut back on the caffeine a little which are both factors in healthy skin & hormonal breakouts. I also take daily vitamins {I have always done this}. As many of you know your skin is not only how you treat it on the outside, but the inside as well!

c49159ea5a1211e38e691281ffd27b69_7My skin has been so different lately! Less oil, minimal breakouts, scars are diminishing, & my overall skin tone is healthier. Like I said before, I am no expert & I still get breakouts. I mean, I’m only human. But I do feel like I have become an “expert” at my own skin recently & for that reason I felt pushed to share what I have discovered by using all these natural products. It’s funny, now that I am 25 I have completely changed the way I view products from food to my skin care & I really wish I would have know about it sooner! If you want me to share more skin care & natural masks I use leave a comment below.  I would love for you to weigh in! Do you have a natural skin care routine? What products work best for you? Do you have a certain line or brand you like? What skin issues do you have? I would love to here your opinions and experiences. Clearasil Superfruits Face wash Review

“This post is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group™ and Clearasil, but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia #SuperFruits”

Lately I have been wanting to share more beauty posts on my blog. Posts about my favorite makeup, tips and tricks, and my skin care routine. I actually used to have a beauty channel on youtube, did you know that? I quit because my heart wasn’t in it anymore, but I would love to share my honest reviews, my favorite products, & maybe even beauty products that didn’t work for me on here as well. If you would like to see more beauty related posts & videos  comment below!

Anyways, recently I was contacted to try a new clearsil product called Clearisil daily clear Superfruit cleanser. I was immediately intrigued. Why? Because my skin has been terrible lately! Let’s back it up a little bit. When I turned 21 I started to see my skin change a little, I was getting breakouts on my chin & my skin was becoming more oily, something I never struggled with before. Mind you my skin is not terrible, but I do have to be really careful what I use on my skin & I can tell right away if a product will break me out or make my skin oily. I’m kind of a product junkie & that is why I want to start sharing more reviews here on the blog, because I try a LOT of things for skin. So back to my recent battle with bad skin. Remember when I went on the GMC trip a few weeks back? Well, a few days before I left for the trip my skin went crazy. I developed a huge breakout all around my mouth, my lips were so dry and cracked that they hurt, and I wanted to cry. I had never had a breakout this bad before. I think it was from stress, but needless to say I was devastated. I was about to fly to a different state to meet up with all new people & meet some of my favorite bloggers for the first time & travel throughout the US for a week with a huge breakout around my mouth. Mind you it’s not all about looks & I’m not saying that, but it does hurt ones self esteem when you have pimples the size of texas on your face. Needless to say I had a great time on the trip & I never felt like one person was judging me or even paying attention to my zits {even though I brought it up a thousand times to them… sorry guys!} & by the time I came back to North Carolina my face was clearing up for the most part & everything was fine, but I was still left with some scaring & a couple of breakouts. I purchased the Clearasil superfruit scrub a few weeks ago at Walmart & I was a little hesitant that it would be harsh on my sensitive skin, but I have been really surprised. I use the scrub at night even though it is sensitive enough to use twice a day. I have been noticing that the exfoliating properties in the scrub have helped the scaring fade, & since I have been using it my epic breakout from the GMC trip has died down.. thankfully!!

PicMonkey Collage
Thankfully my breakouts didn’t really show up in photos on the GMC trip, like this photo I took with my phone on the trip, but those of you who have occasional breakouts know that even if you can’t see them, you still know that they are there & it bugs you.

This face scrub has replaced my other face scrubs for now & my clarisonic. My nightly routine lately goes something like this…

– use face wipe to remove all makeup, including eye makeup

– use the Clearasil face scrub with warm water and gently scrub my skin

-use a gentle face wash to finish cleansing my skin

– apply face lotion

– apply night time face mask

-head to bed!

If you want more of my routine/products comment below!

The texture of the scrub is creamy with more coarse exfoliators, not fine like sand, but chunkier pieces. Not sure if that explains it more to you, but I know to some the texture is important! The smell is lovely & fruity, when I use it it makes me thirsty & to me it does not have a chemical smell at all.

All in all I am really happy with the Clearasil daily clear refreshing superfruit scrub so far & if it continues to be this nice to my skin I will repurchase this face scrub because of the amazing price & the fact that it hasn’t made me breakout. I also wanted to say that if you suffer from breakouts, you are not alone! Find what works best for you and your skin & don’t stress about it, you are still beautiful! Etsy Tips & Tricks-8 Things To Know Before Selling On Etsy

Etsy Tips & Tricks- 8 things I wish I knew before starting my Etsy shop

This series has been a long time coming! I happen to have this amazing friend, Christine, who makes & sells beautiful jewelry in her Etsy shop, All My Heart Shop. Seeing how amazing & successful her shop has grown since she first started has been such an incredible thing for me to witness & I couldn’t be happier for her. Seriously, I think I get more excited about things to do with her shop then she does. A while back I asked her if she would be willing to share all of her tips & tricks about Etsy here on the blog & from that point on we have been brainstorming things she could share & today is finally the day where we start the series & I’m so excited for her to be able to share her insights with all of you who have ever thought about opening an Etsy shop or those of you who have an Etsy shop who are just wanting to learn more. There will be many many posts in this series dealing with everything from SEO, selling tips, packaging, social media & so much more. Today’s post from her is all about things she wish she knew before she started selling on Etsy. Let me turn my blog over to Christine so she can start sharing what she is so passionate about…

Etsy Tips & Tricks: 8 Things to know about Etsy

Hello all! I’m Christine and I am the girl behind All My Heart Shop, where I design and create hand stamped jewelry. Liz and I have been friends for the past 4 years or so. Before she wrote her first blog post, and before I stamped my first piece of jewelry. Wow, how time has flown and our love for making lovely things has grown. I was ecstatic that Liz asked me to be a contributor on her blog, but to be honest I was a bit hesitant because by no means do I believe I am a professional at this Etsy business owning stuff. But I want to share with you 8 of the things I wish I would have known before I started my Etsy shop. I learned most of these tips and tricks by making mistakes, and a lot of them. But that’s how we can learn and grow our business right? Well, I want to help you jump some of these hurdles that I’ve come across in my Etsy journey. So today I am sharing just that — 8 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting My Etsy Shop.

1. It’s all in the name.. Username that is.

When I first decided that I wanted to take the plunge into opening an Etsy shop, I was so incredibly excited that I started working at it right away. Researching, ordering supplies, and even practicing. But one of the many things that I didn’t know in the beginning,  was that I shouldn’t open a new shop with my pre-existing username. Your username can never be changed on Etsy. Not even if you decide to open a shop! Crazy, I know. So choose your name very carefully because it will stick with you forever. I’d recommend picking a name that goes with what you will be naming your shop. I got lucky because my shop name was available as my username as well.

2. Branding, branding, branding.

Brand your shop. There is a plethora of designers on Etsy offering pre-made or even custom Etsy graphic kits. Be sure that your banner, avatar, custom listing photo, as well as you business cards all have the same look. Make your packaging match the ‘theme’ of your shop as well. When people see your logo, you want them to say, “Hey that’s so-and-so’s shop, I love her work”!

3. Post the best photos that you can.

Etsy allows you space for up to five pictures — try to use as many as possible. But if you only have a few good ones, only use those and leave off the not so great pictures. The saying that first impressions are everything holds true on Etsy!! This is because Etsy is an image-driven site, shoppers make quick visual decisions based on needs, personal taste, and the quality of your shop’s images. Try to create clean, clear, clutter-free product photography. Use similar backgrounds and lighting when you photograph your items. For example, I tend to use wooden backdrops inside of a light box and you will never catch me taking a photo without my tripod.

4. Think as if you were the customer.

When listing an item, try to put yourself in your buyers shoes. Remember that when a customer is viewing your item, they will be relying solely on the item’s description and photographs to truly understand what they are purchasing.  What keywords will they use to search for your products? Is your  product personalizable? Is it for a specific person or occasion? Include this information in your item titles,  descriptions, as well as you 13 tags.

5. Don’t list every single item at once, spread them out!

I recommend when first posting items, list only a few things the first day. Then, every single day following, list a new item until all of your items are listed. By using this strategy, your newest items will be higher up in Etsy searches.  This helps keep you more visible to shoppers for a longer period of time.

6. Connect with an Etsy Team.

Etsy has a wonderful thing available called Teams. These are groups of Etsy sellers who are connected by some common thread. It could be that you’re all stay at home mommies, that you sell similar items, or even that all of your names are Christine. I can almost guarantee that you’ll find a team that fits you perfectly. If you can’t seem to find an Etsy team, start looking at different Facebook groups. They have thousands of those as well.  Once I joined in a team, I felt such a sense community and I learned so much from my fellow teamies. So much to the point that I actually refer to them as my friends and honestly can’t picture owning my shop without their support!

7. Provide stellar customer service.

This one is one of the most important things to provide as a business owner. Treat your buyers like youd expect to be treated.. and then go beyond that! Don’t hide anything from your buyers. Be direct about shipping turnaround time, whether you offer refunds or exchanges, how you handle customs and duty fees, and the types of payments you accept. Answer convos and emails as quickly as possible. If you wait over the recommended time of 24 hours, chances are your customer has moved onto a new item to purchase.. And chances are it wont be from your shop.

8. Be patient.

As much as you want to dive right in to your new creative business, keep in mind that it most likely wont take off immediately. Success doesn’t happen overnight. Keep making improvements to your shop, this is the never ending task of a successful Etsy shop owner. Sales can go up and down for no reason at all.. Stay positive during slow times and work on creating more or bettering your shop image or listings!

It’s been fun to take part as a contributor on Liz Marie Blog today, and I look forward to a series that will help you start and grow your Etsy business. I hope you were able to learn something new today, and use the information to kick start your Etsy shop. Happy creating!

XO, Christine
