As I was walking through Walmart the other day, which rarely happens so I decided to check out the entire store. I actually found a few treasures like mums, pumpkins, & a wooden crate. The wooden crate for some reason was calling my name so I through the $8 surprisingly really well built crate in my cart along with a few other items from Walmart to use on the crate. To my shock {& horror} I found this rolling wood crate {here} that Walmart is selling for $210! Ummm no thank you, I will just make my own. With all of my items that Walmart sells right in their store, I made my rolling wood crate for around $25. Got to love DIY my friends!!
This is one of those projects you can do with an extra hour or two of your afternoon & that you can do while you watch your favorite tv show. It’s too simple. Start by painting or staining your crate. You can find crates at craft stores, Walmart, and many other locations. You could also make your own crate, but for eight dollars I couldn’t pass this one up. I painted only the outside of the crate because I wanted to put fabric on the inside. I bought some burlap while I was at Walmart & I loosely lined the inside of the crate with it & used my staple gun to adhere it to the sides of the crate.
I also purchased some wheels at Walmart & I added them to the crate by screwing them into the bottom of the crate in all four corners. Simple simple & I can’t believe all the items are from Walmart!
I don’t know why, but I’m really surprised I found all of the items for this project at Walmart. They even had pumpkins, even though none of the ones in the photos are actually from there. Just goes to show you can create a DIY project from any store for any price. I’m thinking of getting a lot more of these crates soon for a large scale project. What do you think of my DIY rolling wood crate? What do you think I should use it for after fall I take our fall decor down? I would love to hear from you! Books or magazines…
Love it!! Super cute!
Your crates are a steal! Ours at walmart were $12, but I didn’t inspect them to see if they were decent quality. You have such an eye! Cool project, and something I might have to dabble in soon!
For the Christmas holidays, fill it with gifts! Possibly brown paper wrapped with burlap bows…just any kind of wrapping that gives that rustic feel! And stick in an antique doll or toy for decor.
I had no idea Walmart had casters, let alone a crate for that price. Awesome little Fall cart you created and the pumpkins are divine.
Love this! I have been looking for something to hold our printer under the desk that could roll out, and this would be perfect. Thanks for a great idea! xo Andrea

This is beyond cute! I’m going to do this for my kid’s toys in our play room! I think I’ll make one to decorate our porch too. Fantastic idea!
if you wanted to make your crate, I just made one recently and posted how I did it. Here is the link. Great idea with the burlap by the way!

So cute! At least their price was reduced from $260….haha! I have seen people put greenery and candles in crates for Christmas, or a big pile of cozy blankets. I might have to go check out my Walmart for crates now!
Where in Walmart did you find the crate?
What color stain did you use for your crate? It’s perfect!
Your’s is better than their over priced crate! By a long shot!!
What color/brand of stain did you use?
How cute is that!!! Great job, your crate is a million times nicer!!
This is awesome. Looks better than the original. This is great for storage of any kind.
I’m going to make one of these for the shoes we store by our back door. Super cute! Great idea!
I have made my crate and lined it with burlap. When you screwed on your casters, did you just use really small wood screws? I am worried about them coming through my lining or if I use too small of a screw that they will come off when the crate gets rolled around .
