Seriously we named our house. This may seem like a silly idea to some, but to me it means something more. Our home is our little haven. It doesn’t matter that it’s not finished, maybe not our permanent home, not perfect or finished, but it’s our little tri-level cottage & it’s our home right now. It’s the our the place we make memories, share coffee every morning, laugh & act like children, it’s our first home after we left the military life, & it’s our safe place that we are blessed to call ours. I always tend to name our homes when I talk about them to people. “Hey do you remember our tiny town home?” “hey that looks like our olive green craftsman house!” or “wow, that looks like our historic downtown bungalow we lived in.”. Now we have our Cottage on Tyler. Why a cottage? It’s our style, lifestyle, & our obsession with being surrounded by coziness. Cottages are cozy dwellings & that’s what we live in. Wikepedia says this about a cottage: “A cottage is, typically, a small house. The word comes from England where it originally was a house that has a ground floor, with a first, lower storey of bedrooms which fit within the roofspace. In modern usage, a cottage is usually a modest, often cozy dwelling, typically in a rural or semi-rural location.” Our house is modest, our house is cozy, & our house is well loved & well lived in so it must have a name.
Our house is officially “The Cottage On Tyler” & it was officially officially established in 2014 even though we owned it before then, we didn’t move in until 2014 so we count it as that year. So who made this big beautiful sign? My lovely, gorgeous, talented, friend, Tiffini from The House of Beloning. When I came to her and told her I wanted to name our house & showed her the inspiration, I thought she might think I was crazy, but she seemed to like the idea & came out with this beautiful piece of art for our upstairs living room [right when you walk in our front door]. She gets me. Every time. I always wanted some large art work for this wall & I think this piece is just perfect. We actually hung it directly on to the antique windows that are standing behind the couch on screws that are simply just screwed into the outside window pane.
You know what I love most of these photos & this sign? Maybe it’s because I was feeling lazy today, but I didn’t straighten up before I quick shot these of our sign. Our coffee table was shoved to the side this weekend & we never centered it again, the blankets are just thrown, & the pillows are still like I had them with my morning coffee today. Our house is always cozy, always lived in, & even though I always like to have a clean house, it doesn’t hold us back from enjoying our cottage on Tyler thoroughly. As many of you know, I’ve forever been a House of Belonging fan & her work can be found around our house [and past houses]…
I totally plan to name my house too whenever I get my own. Lovely post as usual 🙂
Love it! The sign is just beautiful. The farm we live on has a name but we didn’t name it my inlaws did, I like that it has a name make it more special somehow.
We named our house/farm 8 yrs ago and get comments all the time.
We live on top of a huge hill over looking a valley and raise Christmas trees. High Point Farm
Hence the name.
I think everyone should name their home!!!
love it, what makes a house a cottage?
I love it! I think it is so important for a house to have a name – we just bought our first home, and it seemed wrong to me to just have a number – it’s Spring Cottage now! And today it is a gorgeous sunny spring day and it is really starting to feel like it! And it’s definitely a cottage, built in 1875 in rural England, but I agree, ‘cottage’ is a mentality, and a warmth and cosiness which your home has in spades.
I love the sign, but am even more in love with those glass lamps – are they a DIY (and if so, please send me in the direction of the post)? Just beautiful! x
Completely charming and utterly English! But of course I myself do live in “Storybook Cottage”. 🙂
Love the name you picked, sounds perfect. I will def consider the same once we buy our first house 🙂

Liz, I love the name of your home. I think all homes, no matter how grand or modest, should have a name. We have named our last three homes. Maybe it’s because I grew up in England and house names are common, but I think a home is happiest with a name! Your home is just like you… beautiful!
Not crazy! Our house is Mooney Farms, after Schrute Farms from The Office. 🙂
hey girl, i love that. i tend to name my cars so i can relate. and i always refer to my house as a cottage.. my husband laughs cause its not quite a cottage like you would see on tv. but its a cottage to me cause of its size and our cozy lifestyle also. lol. idk about you, but we live in throws, blankets and pillows. in fact all my kids have to be in some sort of a blanket when sitting on the couch, whether its winter or summer. lol. love the sign. I’m working on putting up a similar sign this week with extra pallet pieces. and this post made it that much more exciting!

Your friend did an am amazing job on the sign. No doubt! However, my comment is a little more personal. I just want to tell you how much I enjoy you. I wish we could really know each other. I get you, your style, your dreams, your disappointments, your sense of humor and I especially love that you don’t take every single think too seriously. To be even more honest, because of all these traits, you help keep me centered, motivated and inspired. I am sure you do this for others too. Thanks!!! Didn’t mean to overdo it. Just wanted to let you know how much you are appreciated.
PS You think I could name an apartment!!!!???? lol
Where do you get all your cozy pillows from? I love the mans everything else in your house!
