You read that title right! I might actually paint one room in our home a different color than Benjamin Moore Dove white. Before we moved into this house we both knew that we wanted the whole house to be cohesive with flooring & paint color. The home is 4 levels & all of the walls kind of blend together in the main parts of the house. When we switched the guest bedroom & office around the guest bedroom ended up on our lower level in it’s own little cozy area of the house. The walls needed to be painted because they were still “smokers white” so I thought why not throw caution to the wind & go with another color other than the rest of the house. I’m kidding, but I really wanted to warm up this room with the wall color so let’s get into it…
[I had to use these iPhone photos because I’m a ditz & forgot to put a camera card in my camera when I was taking photos of the swatches earlier today. Please forgive me.. I’ll be adding more photos later today when the sun comes back out. I’ll be showing the paint in different light, in the pots, & more so if you are here early on be sure to stop back later today!]
I wish that photographing paint swatches came across a little better. I promise you that the “white” color in the top right corner is warm & not so white, but anyways… Here are 4 colors that I picked for the room.. for now. I might go for a round 2, but I love getting some colors on the wall & in the rooms actual lighting to see if it’s right for the space. I wanted a warm neutral color for the room to really give it that cozy vibe & these are the colors I have started with..
This room only has one window & is quite small so against the white these colors look bold & quite dark. My heart is leaning towards sail cloth or Sculptors clay. I love how neutral & warm both are. Here is a room that I found in the sculptors clay that made me want to use this color even more…
This guest room from Picket Fence in Behr Sculptors clay has me swooning. I realize our room doesn’t have this much light, but I think I will paint a bigger area & be back with you shortly with those results. I may also go grab a few more samples & try them next to the existing samples just to compare more colors. What do you think? What color are you leaning towards so far? Let me know in the comments below, find me on Facebook, & chat with me on Instagram. I’ll be back soon with some better pictures for you!
Some more guest bedroom updates:
Your photos always turn out beautifully whenever you use white so I would say sail cloth. On the other hand, Christmas is right around the corner and the wheat bread would feel cozy (love the purple tones in this grey) and make your antique white furniture pop! I don’t know why I am even try to give advice when I am having the same problem! ha. Can’t wait to see what you decide! Good Luck!
Sculptors clay definitely sculptors clay!! ;0)
I love gray and greige walls. I had the hardest time finding the right colors, they all had heavy purple tones. After 20 swatches on the wall I went with Sherwin Williams Requisite Gray {true gray} in my sons bedroom and Behr Gravelstone {greige} in my kitchen/living room. Good luck on the process, I look forward to seeing what you pick.
The Behr Mineral jumped out to me as a color that would go well with all grey tones in your house. I will enjoy watching the process unfold.
Hi Liz – love all the colors! We have Behr Wheat Bread in our master bedroom and bathroom and I love it. It’s not nearly dark as I thought it would be (the lady at HD convinced me to go with Wheat Bread and not the lighter one I originally picked out) and we get very little natural light in that room as well (only sliders to the screened in porch). You can see a few photos here: https://lovelandlodge.com/2015/08/21/house-tour-part-ii-bedrooms-master-bath-man-attic/
I say Sculptors Clay. If you’re already going to go “outside of the box” from your usual Dove White, I say it makes sense that you go for more contrast with a deeper, darker tone. The Sail Cloth color is pretty, but it is still light and bright like Dove White. In that case, you may as well stay with the same color. A darker tone will make your white accents pop–as someone else stated before–and add more dimensionI think you’ll be happier in the end if you branch out and do something different. Life is too short not to change it up! I don’t agree with the typical “rule” that small rooms with little light can’t be painted deeper/darker tones. I’ve seen just the opposite done time and time again and it’s so charming.
Hi Liz,
I like the Sculptors Clay. Whatever you choose will look fabulous.
Liz – how ’bout Sculptors Clay at half strength? In a small room that might be the answer
