You know me, I rarely come on here and share my beauty & health tips, but when I do it’s because I love it & it works for me. I shared before how I cured my acne and problematic skin [here] & I can’t tell you how many emails, comments, & people I meet in public that tell me that it saved their skin too. Acne is no fun & being able to take care of it naturally is amazing. If you struggle with your skin for sure check that post out. Today I wanted to share something with you I have been doing for over a year now. I don’t do it everyday simply because I forget, but it really has benefited me in many ways. It’s call oil pulling & many of you may have heard of it before. It’s where you take a tablespoon of coconut oil & you swish it in your mouth [pulling between your teeth] for 20 minutes before spitting it out when you are done & it helps clean your mouth among other things. Strange right?
Coconut oil is antibacterial, antiviral, antimicrobial, & anti-fungal. These things are great for your oral health of course among other things, but today we are only talking about oil pulling. Coconut oil detoxifies your mouth & makes it a clean environment which effects your overall health because you are not swallowing bacteria & other things that are bad for your health. I am not a scientist or a doctor, but did a lot of research before I started doing this & I suggest you do to before you start. Just google oil pulling & you will find some great articles from people far smarter than me.
Some benefits of oil pulling:
-whitens teeth
-prevents cavities
-TMJ relief
-soothes throat dryness
-freshens breath
-alleviates headache
-strengthens teeth & gums
-increases energy
-draws out toxins
-heals skin issues
-aids hormonal changes
-heals cracked lips
-helps alleviate sinus congestion
-helps detox the body
I’ve even heard it can help cure hangovers. I mean, what doesn’t coconut oil do? If you have read my skincare post you also know I wash my face with coconut oil which I LOVE. Those anti- [….] properties really come into play again there. The goal in skincare & oral care? kill all the germs while healing & strengthening at the same time. That’s what coconut oil does.
So what’s my experience? I’m obsessed. I typically oil pull while getting ready & doing my hair, in the shower, & actually I oil pulled today while taking a few photos for the blog. They say to do it right away in the morning, but that doesn’t always work for me. I suggest doing it while you are doing a little task to help pass the time quicker. I use about a tablespoon of coconut oil I oil pull for as long as I can [20 minutes is suggested] & then I brush my teeth right after. My mouth feels so clean after & I can for sure tell a difference in how clean & fresh my mouth is. My teeth aren’t the whitest because of my love for cherry coke, coffee, & tea, but coconut oil for sure helps keep them whiter & I know I can attribute it to the oil pulling. My skin is better when I oil pull & I feel better. Sometimes I wonder if it’s correlated, but I do notice a difference when I do it more regularly. I can’t explain how it works, but my review is that I’m going to keep doing it! I typically get my coconut oil from Marshalls which I always find it there for a great price. & for those of you not caring what I’m talking about today & just want to know where everything in the photo is from.. it’s all marshals [you know that store is my jam] & the little tree guys are Ikea of course. The ONLY negative I have experienced from oil pulling? Sometimes the texture can get to me. I’m not always in the mood to oil pull because it does have a texture & a taste, but this rarely happens & is different for everyone, but worth sharing for sure.
Not the whitest teeth in America, but much whiter than they would be without the coconut oil because of my coffee & tea addiction. You can also mix in essential oils in with your coconut oil before you oil pull. I’ve never done this, but I’ve heard it’s great & it’s worth a try if you have some essential oils laying around! Today’s post was so different than my usual, but I’ve been meaning to share this little ritual of mine for a while. I just like it so much that I couldn’t keep it a secret. Do you oil pull? What is your experience with it? I would love to hear from you!! Let me know in the comments below, find me on Facebook, & chat with me on Instagram. As always, thank you so much for stopping by my little blog & sharing it with your friends it means so much. xx
I love oil pulling, but I don’t do it as often as I should. It really helps with teeth sensitivity, too. When I do it consistently, I notice that it’s easier to eat things that are cold or sugary, because my teeth won’t hurt.
I’m intrigued! If you do it first thing in the morning, do you brush before and after? Also, when you put it in your mouth is it mush and then turn liquid-y or does it stay kind of solid? Can you describe the taste? I’ve never even tasted coconut oil. I have weird aversions to taste and texture, so knowing what to expect will help me mentally prepare 😉
I think your teeth look extremely white! I’m the same way with the oil pulling. I love how it makes my teeth feel and look but sometimes I forget or don’t want to deal with the texture either! One thing I like to do before is warm it up so it’s already in liquid form and that helps for me 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
Good question!! It’s a solid and then turns to liquid. It’s quite strange, but worth a try for sure to see if you can handle it! It has a hint of coconut, but not overwhelming. & you are supposed to do it right away in the morning but sometimes I do it at night… I just brush after I do it Hope this helps & that you give it a try!! xx
Great advice!!!! I’ve never tried it like that. I’ll have to do that. Thank you for sharing!! xx
Me either!!! I wish I did it 7 days a week, but I forget sometimes & sometimes there just isn’t time haha. So interesting to hear about the sensitivity I’ll have to pay attention to that now and see if it helps mine!! Thank you for sharing that! xx
I love oil pulling too! I always forget to do it, but it works awesome. This might be gross but I had my first dentist checkup last week after 6 years. Terrible I know. We had tons of life changes and a baby thrown in the mix and I never had time to go. But not one single cavity after all those years. And I’m sure oil pulling had a lot to do with it. Love your skin care tips too, Liz! Last winter my skin went haywire, and I found your method and tried it, and it worked! I’ve modified it a little now but washing my face in coconut oil at night and doing that honey/nutmeg/cinnamon mask always feels amazing. Always love getting your beauty tips. 🙂
I’ve heard such great things about oil pulling and seeing how white your teeth are is proof of the benefits! I have a strong feeling that I wouldn’t be able to get over the taste and texture though, especially for 20 minutes. Though, if I decide to try it out I’ll be sure to take your advice and do it while working on a specific task.

I’ve been oil pulling for a while now and live it… I recently added some Thieves and Peppermint essential oils to it and I love see it. The Peppermint t taste helps me get over the texture. 🙂
I am an oil pulling fan too! Just wanted to say, make sure you spit it out in the trash, not into the sink!
I have never heard of this. Gonna give it a try. Where do you buy your coconut oil from?

I love oil pulling! Every morning when I get my oil, I give my dog a little as well. She loves it & her coat has never been healthier!
Just one teensy comment on the pulling……NEVER, EVER. EVER spit the coconut oil in the sink, or even the shower!!! Just fair warning that it can re-solidify and clog your drains. Besides if you did it in the shower it could be slippery and cause an accident. Otherwise oil pulling is awesome! I use doTERRA’s OnGuard mixed in my coconut oil and it helps fight bacteria, bad breath, any illness that may be coming on etc. If anyone is interested check out my website http://www.mydoterra.com/toribeard we have lots of lovely oils! Someone above asked about the issue of what it tastes like….hardly any real coconut flavor, but it IS a greasy texture which can turn some people off to pulling. I’m a very texture plagued person when it comes to food, and oil is NOT something I care for! So for me to do this I just make sure I keep the oil to the front of my mouth. It has so many benefits that I just say suck it up, pull on the big girl panties and deal with it! LOL Really, so many benefits it’s well worth the texture =)
Okay, so it’s in my mouth! Trying it now. I’m glad I read someone else’s comment about it being so solid! I think I will warm it up first next time. That’s a good and important tip for me because when it comes to textures I don’t have the strongest gag reflex either. I could never do this in the morning, or when pregnant! LOL! I’m super excited to see how it effects me! I’ve heard of oil pulling forever and your post made me finally want to try it! Here we go!
I have started doing this since my teeth are very yellow and I can’t afford for the dentist to do it. I only do it for a few minutes and actually swallow the oil afterwards. (I only use about 1/2 tsp.) It helps as an appetite suppressant. I have done some research and know you are supposed to spit it out so I may try just spitting it out and then ingesting a different dose. 😉
