I have this very very very special woman in my life & I call her grandma. I am blessed to have both of my wonderful grandmas in my life still & it makes me cry just thinking how lucky I am & that I really should spend more time with them because I love them so much. I lived away for 8 years and was unable to see them whenever I wanted. It really makes you realize how lucky you are to live near your family. Anyways, I will only be talking about one of my grandmas today who means the world to me & who also has the better style than me. I want to say that I got my love for home decor & design from her & my aunt. Growing up she always knew exactly what she wanted, she was particular in a good way, & her style was consistent, classy, & comfortable. I just admired her & how she payed such close attention to details in her home. She loved making her & my grandpa’s home a place that they loved & were proud of. Every time I would go over to my grandma’s house when I was little I would rearrange some of her knick knacks because I wanted to be like her & when I left she would go around the house and notice all the changes I made & I was so proud of that. I imagine a child doing that around my house right now & I will have to love them lots for that not to annoy me.. so I know my grandma must have loved me a lot because she always laughed about it. Until that one time that I left a note in her oven for her to find after I left & she did when she pre-heated her oven & smelled the paper burning. Yah, we won’t talk about that. & yes she still loves me through all of my flaws & almost starting her house on fire with a love note. That is true love that only a grandma can have. Why am I talking about my grandma? Because she passed on some lovely pieces of furniture to Jose and I & we did something with one of those pieces that I wanted to share with you guys. My grandma has amazing taste & picks out the best pieces of furniture out there. The one thing that differs between my grandma & I? Our color pallet choice. She is into that warm colors and lots of pops of color which I love, but we just don’t have that in our home so I decided to hire a professional to give the chair a new look so that we could enjoy it in our space…
Here is the chair before we gave it a makeover a few weeks ago. It was the perfect napping chair no matter what fabric it had on it as Jose demonstrates so perfectly here….
Oh & why yes that it is a giant cherry coke stain on the rug. Luckily it came out quite easily with our carpet cleaner vacuum, but we won’t talk about that either. Here is the after of the lovely chair makeover..
I chose a blue & cream ticking fabric I found at Joann’s craft store. I used a 60% off coupon & for 8 yards it was around $60 not bad! Now on to where the real money was at. I honestly didn’t do much shopping around for an upholster in our area & went simply by a high recommendation from a friend because I didn’t want anyone to mess up my grandma’s chair. So I was quoted $400 to upholster the ottoman and the chair. I was a little in sticker shock because I wasn’t expecting it be that much & I normally would not spend that, but it is a very special chair to me & since it was a gift from my grandma that I know we will keep forever I thought it was worth it & I have no regrets about it. The guy did an amazing job [for my local friends we used “The Golden Needle” in Borculo Michigan. He was so nice, had a fast turnaround time, & seriously did such a professional job. Highly recommend him!] My biggest advice I can give on this topic is to either save the money and do it yourself [I wasn’t willing to tackle this large of an upholstery project with how novice I am at the trade] or find someone in your area that people recommend. I am so happy with how the chair came out & I hope it makes my grandma proud as well. By the way we did have him scotch guard the chair to protect from staining and damage since this is one of the ONLY pieces in our house that is not slipcovered which scares me a little, but hopefully the scotch guard helps.
So there is the chair in our upstairs living room. I love having coffee here in the morning & it’s now the dogs favorite place to sleep as well. They lay on the footstool almost all day which is quite cute & I’m sure you will see tons of photos on my social media of them & me enjoying this chair for years to come. What do you think of our ticking stripe chair makeover? Let me know in the comments below, find me on Facebook, & chat with me on Instagram. As always, THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for stopping by my little blog & sharing it with your friends. It means the world to me! Oh, & go hug your grandmas. xx
I love the fabric you picked and it looks great with your decor. Of course it does, you always have your mo jo on ! Oh, the comment about Grandmas is very sweet and so true. Life goes by much too fast and we need to “remember who we are” and show respect by regularly visiting with our Grandparents who love us more than we could ever know! I miss both of my Grandmas and especially the one you are named after. Even though she lived past 90 her time here was much too short. I am convinced that she is with me everyday in spirit!
Love you! Aunt Kim
The chair is BEAUTIFUL! Great fabric choice! I was actually expecting the cost of reupholstering it to be a little more than you paid, so I think you got a deal. 🙂 Scotch Guard is my bestie in our house! I’m sure it’ll do a good job protecting your chair. 🙂
Wow I love it!! It looks amazing.. It makes me want to make a chair of my very own. Try not to spill any cherry coke on it 😉 all the best.

Okay…let me first say I found you via The Nester. I am sitting at my laptop just taking in all the beautiful pictures. Girl, you have talent. I love your style. What would you call it? It’s gonna take me a while to see it all…LOVE it.
That is a lovely piece from your grandma that you made more ‘you’. It does indeed look like the perfect spot to relax.
Love the chair!
Such uncanny timing for your post. My grandmother passed away 2 years ago today, and my other grandmother’s funeral was 15 years ago today. I think you and I are the same age; it’s great that you still have grandparents and can see them. Don’t forget! Give your grandma an extra hug for me next time!

Wow.. thank you CJ… you just made my entire day. So glad you found my little blog! I usually call my style cozy cottage or something along those lines. Thank you again for your sweet words! xx
Love the chair Liz. You have great vision! Ticking stripes are one of my favorite 🙂
