I want to start this post out by saying that I am not an expert upholster. Like in the least bit. Just a girl who likes trying new things & who gets ideas in her head & has to go through with them. Last week when I was trying to get the store open by our grand opening on Thursday I saw this chair sitting around & instead of doing things I should be to get the store ready I decided to give the chair a little makeover. The best part? I had all the material lying around already & no plan, I just went with it & ended up with a stripe grain sack chair makeover…
When I found the chair up it wasn’t really my style & I imagined it being a rustic shabby chair that looked like it had been used and loved for 50 years with some neutral fabrics. I happened to have some curtains from H&M that I wasn’t using lying around & a grain sack that I wanted to use. Here is what the chair looked like before I got my hands on it…
Not bad. Just not my style. Here is how the chair looks now…
Since I’m not a pro & wanted kind of an “unfinished” look, I don’t really have a complete tutorial. But what I did was pretty simple. I used one striped curtain from H&M for the chair & one for the ottoman. I used a staple gun to adhere the new fabric. After I got the blue stripe fabric in place [by the way this whole project maybe took me an hour if not less] I took the grain sack & cut it up into a few pieces to place on the chair. I adhered the grain sack with the staple gun as well. It was kind of random, but it works I think. Lucky for me I didn’t have to paint the chair. I could have refreshed the white paint, but it wasn’t necessary.
Ok, so it’s not perfect, but it was a fun little upholstery project & not bad for my first time? I want to really get the “unfinished” shabby look down, but it all comes with practice right? In the midst of the stress of opening the store this project was actually therapeutic & I look forward to doing more upholstery projects in the future. 1,000 staples later & I’m ready for the next one. I shot these photos of the chair in our store, with a sign from Feather & Birch, a pillow from The Family Roost, a ladder from Jessica Co. Vintage, a table from domestic archeology, & greenery from The Golden sycamore. We have some seriously talented vendors & they make my chair look good. Want to know a weird fact about me? I hate when people look at my work because it embarrasses me. Strange coming from the girl who blogs everyday huh? I guess I’m just an ironic person, or maybe I just like to subject myself to embarrassment, but what keeps me sharing is our journey. I’m sure when I practice upholstery I will look back at this chair & see how much better I got [hopefully not worse]. I truly love blogging & sharing my journey with you guys & this chair was part of that journey so I hope you enjoyed! Thank you guys so much for stopping by the blog today! Be sure to find me on Facebook & Instagram to keep up with me. xx
