One thing that kind of went to the waste side in 2016 since opening a store & buying our fixer upper farmhouse was the DIY side of Liz Marie. The girl who used to make something daily or paint something weekly. Since opening up our store [which I love so much] I have had to put some things aside & DIY’ing projects was one of them. Of course we have been doing DIY’s in our farmhouse, but not a lot of the fun little ones that I used to do. I promised myself that in the next year I wouldn’t let that happen again.. so hold me accountable for that ok? Well, this week I actually sat down to make something that I had planned out last Christmas… YES! Last Christmas. When we lived in a completely different home. I obviously got busy, but I wasn’t going to let another year go by without bringing this idea of mine to life….
This was such a simple DIY project, but I love how it turned out! I really wanted to make a Christmas tree out of old spindles. I always see spindles around in my picking adventures & I found a bundle last Christmas season at my local habitat store that I thought would be perfect for this project. Who knows how the spindles made it through our big move in the past year, but I’m glad they did! I gathered up some spindles & an old door that we had in our garage to create a Christmas tree perfect for our cottage style farmhouse…
Making this tree was super easy & just required some taping and planning. First we played out the spindles on the door as shown above. We then taped the shape of off the tree & used a dremel tool to cut out the shape. Then to do the top & bottom of the tree we used the scraps that we had just cut off the rest of the tree. We laid out all of the parts onto the old door & used a nail gun to fasten all of the spindles to the door. It was seriously that easy. One extra thing we did that wasn’t shown here was that the top of the tree laid lower on the door because it’s spindles didn’t touch the raised trim on the outside of the door so we placed shims under the top of the tree for it to line up properly with the bottom part of the tree.
Now this is my kind of Christmas decor… neutral & chippy! I know some of you would agree to that. It felt so good to actually sit down & make something again… I really am serious that I will be a maker again in 2017 for our home & for our shop. It’s what makes me happy & I don’t want to let that part of me go. It’s why I started Liz Marie Blog years ago & it’s what I’ve been doing my whole life. What do you guys think of my DIY spindle Christmas tree? You should totally make one! You can put your own twist on it & make it match your decor.. it’s pretty fun! Let me know what you think & be sure to share it with me if you end up making one for your home. Chat with me on Facebook & Instagram. As always, THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for stopping by my blog today & for sharing it with your friends & family. xx
This spindle tree is styled in our dining room, see more of the space below..
Love this! I was actually thinking of cutting the spindles in half first, then butt the ends up together so the detail of the wood would be towards the center of the tree!
This is so unique. Thank you for sharing where you go picking. We have flea markets we frequent and one Habitat store we roam thru. It helps to get ideas of where to look for the items our heart is drawn too.
