Ok, we just spent the entire weekend painting the floors. We thought this would be a quicker process, but we forgot about the part where we are literally playing tetris with all of our furniture as we paint. That means we are shoving all of the dining room furniture into the kitchen when we paint that room & then vice versa as we moved along. It added a lot of time & work to shuffle around all of the furniture as we we went along, but at this point we have the dining room done & we are almost done with the kitchen & sunroom! Today I wanted to share with you the progress & answer some of the FAQ’s we have been getting since starting this painted floor process. I’ll be doing an entire post when we are all done with all of the details & do’s and don’ts, but for now here is where we are at… The house is a mess, we are covered in paint, & we are LOVING the floors so far…
1. What color did you choose?
We went with Benjamin Moore tapestry beige. You can read more about that process [HERE] & see the other colors we almost chose.
2. What kind of paint are you using?
We are using Behr Porch & Floor paint. It’s the same paint we used when we painted our office floors & we are in love with the coverage & the durability of it.
3. Are you sealing the floors?
Yes!! We are using Pro Finisher Polyurethane for floors in the low luster finish. We also used this on the office floors and are super happy with the application & how it has held up. I also love that it adds a little sheen to the floor to give it a finished look, but that it’s also not super glossy.
4. How do you plan on keeping them looking perfect?
We aren’t. The plan is to let them get ware and tear over time and age with our house. We are hoping that they age beautifully and can tell our families story over time with each dent, scratch, & flaw. But this could change.. who knows we could give it a fresh coat every 5 years? Who knows.. but my hope is to let them age with us.
5. Does Jose love the painted floors?
YES! He is equally in love which is the only way I would ever paint them. Every time we put a coat on he sighs and says how much he loves it which warms my heart.. we both love how warm and cozy it has made our house. He is also on board to let the floors age with us & that is the part he is most excited for.
6. Are you painting the floors in every room of your house?
For now we are doing the sunroom, the kitchen, the dining room, the front living room, & the front entryway. That may seem like a lot of rooms, but there are plenty more in the house we haven’t started re-doing so we will see when we get to those what we decided to do with the flooring.
7. Will Grace Be Able To Come Back In The House?
TBD. Just kidding, I could never not let her back in, but maybe this spring when she get’s cleaned up & isn’t such a hot mess.
Ok. I think that answers a lot of the burning questions. I know there was more, but if you have anymore let me know in the comments below, on Facebook, & on Instagram & I will answer them in the next post when we reveal the painted floors when they are finished. Today we will hopefully be finishing the kitchen & sunroom & then moving on to the front living room & entryway… wish us luck, there is a lot of furniture in that space! So far we are LOVING the floors & I’m so excited to get the rooms back together & start decorating again! Our house finally feels like it’s becoming our home.. I hope you guys are enjoying the process with us & thank you SO MUCH for cheering us on & for stopping by the blog today & everyday to see what we are up to!! xx
Hi there!!!!
LOVE your work on the floors!!!
Also, may I ask where the floor mirror is from?
THANKS and great work!
I love your home. The painted floors are beautiful❤️
I love the painted floors and your beautiful farmhouse.
I like them. It makes the light bounce around more. I love just the wood as well. love the color. Great job! Your decorating is so warm and cozy.
Love the floors! Looks so fantastic but I am just dying to see the kitchen once you do a final reveal! I know it will be stellar!!! ?
I love the progress you and Jose are making! There is nothing like making a house your home❤️
Can you tell us in your final post: Did you use paint brushes? Rollers? What type of roller, etc.
The floors look FREAKING RAD! I never expected to love painted floors but it really pulls everything together in your beautiful farmhouse. It makes me want to rip up all my carpet! Very nice work. I can’t wait to see everything once it’s all done. Great job going with your gut!
Liz, your floor color choice is to die for beautiful. No surprise there. I haven’t seen a single thing you do that I don’t like. Hey but can you tell me where oh where you got your killer deconstructed chair?? #goals but I never see these! Anywhere! Help! XO
Amazing! They will look even better as they age. I was at a country store here in my area where the painted floors have worn down to the bare wood from thousands of customers walking around. They have so much character and history now and look incredible! Love your home Liz!?
Love love love!!! I really liked the floors stained as well but painting them really does warm up the whole space. I aslo love the idea of letting them wear with your day to day life!! So happy that you finally did what you wanted to do with your house ?even if there are people that disagree because in the end it’s your home.
Love it!
We will want an update, though, about if they are a nightmare to keep clean! We had original 1920’s white tile floors in our last bathroom, and they showed every speck of hair and lint. I am terrified to have a light floor ever again… so I am crossing my fingers for you!
Love the color you choose. It looks so beautiful!
Is Grace warm enough outside in the winter? She’s so sweet, I worry about if she’s okay out there, especially when she’s used to being able to go in the house.
I think it’s looking great so far! I was a huge fan of the stained floors, but these really do fit your home so well!
I checked out that beautiful mirror also! It’s from Arhaus.com ☺️
Oh I’m LOVING them too!! Sometimes it takes awhile to work out what’s best for our homes!! Can’t wait to see them finished and all your decor back! ????
I love the floors!! I love light-bright-cozy and I think your newly painted floors pull that off perfectly.
Are your floors hard to clean with the grooves. Does dirt and dust get in the cracks and is it hard to get out?
Grace is probably THE warmest and most comfy farm animal! She has a full flock of warm wool keeping her cozy even in these cold Michigan winters, she is ok, no need to worry 🙂
STUNNING! We have an old farm house circa 1900ish that lost its original floors long ago. I love the idea of the pine floors but my question is around the cracks in between the boards…did you put something between them and the subfloor to protect the subfloor? What about wet spills (dogs, kids, messy husbands, swimming pool out back)? I’m worried that they would just look trashed and not cute/vintage worn in lol (and I don’t really want my subfloor to rot haha).
Thoughts??
I love the painted floors! I loved the stain too but the paint looks amazing. Good for you for trying new things until you are happy with the results! Your home is beautiful and reading your blog and watching your stories is my favorite way to relax and get inspired to do my own projects. 🙂
It’s looking great! And your whole place just looks incredible, such a cozy home!
Love the floors. I always wanted you to paint them.
I LOVE YOUR FLOORS !! Did you purchase from a flooring store or just pine boards? Also sort of floor related, I asked you the dumb question of rugs ( someone help me) I’ve never had any ( yes I am 100) and wondering what size you used near your new pottery barn table – the rectangle? Jute? Does it smell a long time ? Please help !
