You guys have been patiently waiting for updates on a few rooms in our house & honestly, that’s the reality of living in a fixer-upper. Nothing is ever complete … We have so many projects started & can’t complete them all at once. But I really wanted to give you guys an update on our mudroom. This is one area of our home I wanted to update for so long & I’m so excited to share the progress with you guys!

Here is a little glimpse at our back hallway before. So dark & not our style at all:

We did some major updates to the mudroom with the help of our contractor. First, we expanded the room four feet into the back living room. You can see what this back living room looked like HERE. Nearly all of our guests enter our home through this mudroom, so we really wanted to expand this space.

When we expanded the mudroom we took out closets on both sides of the back entryway. We really didn’t utilize the closet space [this house has a lot of closets] so they were filled more with junk than anything else! Taking out these closets really opened up this space. I wish I would have taken a photo of how messy the closets really were. It was embarrassing.

The flooring used to be faux brick in the back hall. We were always told that it was real brick and that it would be really difficult to take out. But with the help of our contractor, we quickly discovered that it was faux brick. It was still a lot of work to remove but far easier than removing real brick. We decided to match the floor to the rest of our house! We laid pine boards over sub floor like we did in the rest of the house. You can check out how we painted our floors [HERE].

I wanted to try something a little different in the mudroom so we went with vertical shiplap in here! You guys know I love shiplap & have it all throughout our home … But we had only ever done horizontal shiplap. I love that the vertical shiplap in here gives the room a slightly different look & looks really good with the peg rail we added in! & as always I love the texture it gave to the walls.

Our plan is to add peg rail to all of the walls in the mudroom. One wall is all for hanging our coats, bags, and winter accessories! On the wall by our bathroom, I have a few more decor style items hanging from the peg rail.

Doors: We replaced the exterior door in the mudroom. Our old door wasn’t staying sealed very well so there was a constant draft coming in. And if it wasn’t shut properly the door would open. Our new door matches our cozy cottage style home a lot better as well! I love all the light it lets in to the mudroom, but we still need to paint it.. more on that later! The two French doors in the mudroom that are taped up currently lead to the “back living room” once those are painted we will take the tape off. The door leading to the bathroom needs to be replaced now because it’s too high off the ground after we took the brick up, more on that later as well.

Jose’s latest project in the mudroom has been building a shoebox! We really wanted a space that we could store our shoes, without leaving them all over the floor back here. We will have a DIY for the shoe box up on the blog next week for you guys in case you wanted to build your own! Here is all our progress in the mudroom for now, I will be back soon with the completed space to show you guys!
Looks Awesome!!

I love all the peg rail!! Is Jose building it himself or are your ordering it from somewhere?
Wow what a transformation!!
I’m inspired!
Adding that extra 4 feet was BRILLIANT! I can’t get over how huge the space looks now! What a fantastic transformation and I can’t wait to see all the swoon-worthy ways you’re going to style those peg rails over the seasons.

Had no idea so many of you would want the paint color of the bathroom door! It is Fusion Mineral Paint Putty.
Such an amazing makeover.!!
I’ve noticed the frustrating trend to not date blog posts. I like a date on a post. I dont care if I click on a post that is older. But, I do like to explore and read things in chronological order.
Super amazing! Thank you for sharing your ideas and progress !!
Your mud room is the most thought out, well planned, functional, beautiful space. Absolutely FABULOUS!!
Ok…have spent a lot of time scouring your posts…u r my go-to girl lol…we bought an old farmhouse we r rehabbing…what is your final consensus on wall color? I’ve noticed two different paint colors that u mention…dove and ship lap…it’s time for me to paint…what’s it gonna b, my revered paint (and all decor) guru? Thanks ?
Hey Annie,
I would always test out a paint color in your home first. Our home is Sherwin Williams Pure White! My neighbor tried to use the same color in her home and it turned out purple. Here is a post with a bunch of really great white paints, I would get samples and see what looks best in your home. https://www.lizmarieblog.com/2019/04/the-top-white-paint-colors-according-to-you/
Thank you so much! I really wanted to make this space super functional for our family!
You can see the date in the URL of the blog post on my blog!
Such an inviting space for your friends to enter your home! love all the peg board! We had a “short” door too that was original to our cabin. Steve added several inches to the bottom of the door by planing a piece to the correct thickness, then biscuiting it to the original door. you can’t tell it and it saved the door! I faux painted the bottom to match the old paint. Just an idea!
T H I S ☝?has me BEYOND swooning! Dearest Liz, wherever did you find that farmhouse sink?! I have been dreaming of one just like it for EVA! Your mudroom is stunning… from one farmwife to another — if you do find a way to have your Farmer keep it lovely like this, please do share! Tee hee! So gorgeous! <3
actually i was looking for some decor ideas and found your blog…
really great collection.. i will definitely try this in my new home…
Gorgeous! I love it all so far! That sink is amazing and suits that space well. ❤❤❤
I love your space and the greeter at the door, your dog is so cute!
GORGEOUS!! What’s the grayish color of the door?
I just noticed your comment about fusion paint putty color. Is there ANYTHING similar in color in sherwin Williams? I know the fusion paint is good but there are no retailers in the area and I don’t want to spend too much to paint my doors. Did you paint them both sides or just the front of the doors?
Oh I truly love this. I grew up with a kitchen sink just like this. A wire dish drainer sat on the left, and how many times do I wish I had that to hang on the wall !!! Funny how simple things can make you feel so cozy. thanks for sharing.
Your home is beautiful! I did see what colors you used on the walls, ceiling and trim. What finish would that be on all the surfaces? Thank you so much for sharing everything. Including your wonderful family.
I’m new to your blog and was immediately drawn to your style! I love love love the floors. Mentioned this to my husband years ago with the naturally spacing and nailing down – how do you clean them? Regular vacuuming I would assume would get the dirt out of the cracks but what do you do for spills or wet feet. I would LOVE to convince him of this type of flooring for our home. Any advise would be appreciated thanks so much!
I’m suffering from sink envy!!!!
Love this design! Would you mind sharing the paint color on the door of the mud room..not the French doors the single door. Love it!
