Over the last few weekends I have found quite a few antique pieces, which I shared here & we wanted to style them right away! So I spent some time shelf styling them on our built-ins. On my Instagram stories, I shared a few tips for styling shelves while I was working on this & wanted to share on the blog as well. I hope this helps you next time you are styling your shelves! I have done many posts on shelf styling, but today I just wanted to share some quick tips to spice up any shelving in your home…
Tip #1: Break up your shelves with large scale items
If you have too many small items it can make your shelves look cluttered. Break up the small items with some large focal point items. Things like large plants, clocks, scales, vases, or lamps are great items to use!
Tip #2: Add texture
Think baskets, plants, glass, paint, books, marble, pillows, blankets, lamps, etc. Different types of texture bring so much variety to your shelves which not only make it look more visually interesting but also bring a cozy feel to your shelves. I always load my shelves with a bunch of different textures to keep things interesting and unique! Tip: Make sure each of your shelving sections has some variety and different textures to keep the interest up throughout the whole shelf area.
Tip #3: Add some interest
Switch up your books by laying some horizontal, vertical, backwards, etc! Make your eyes dance around the shelves & keep things interesting. Switch things up to prevent your eyes from getting stuck on one thing. Often times we get stuck styling our shelves the same way with the same items. Stop and think how you can switch those common items up. Maybe layer the item, maybe flip the item around, maybe move the item to a different shelf.
Tip #4: Pull back and take a photo
Step back and take a photo of your shelves, this is a great way to see if any changes need to be made. Once you look at it in a photo you can reevaluate the shelves instead of being so up close & in it. You will notice any bare spots in your shelves, things you don’t like, and can then move items around as needed.
Tip #5: Make your shelves different heights
If possible adjust the shelves so that they are not all uniform. As you can see with our shelves no section is separated the same and I can adjust the shelf heights anytime I would like to! This allows for your eyes to dance across the shelves and provides so much visual interest. When each shelf is the same height it is harder to break up small pieces with larger items due to the the height restrictions.
I have so many other blog posts with tips for styling shelves. Here is one for styling kitchen shelves, here is a styling a smaller shelf, & here is one with tips for styling a cabinet. Hope these posts help you next time you are styling your shelves! Thank you so much for stopping by the blog today and everyday.
