Do you have a lamp that needs an update? Maybe it doesn’t quite fit your décor anymore or it is a thrift store find that needs an updated look. You can update a lamp by painting, using Rub ‘n Buff wax, replacing with a new lamp shade, or painting the existing lamp shade. I would like to share a quick and budget-friendly DIY lamp update that I created with spray paint I already had.

Tips on spray painting a lampshade:
- Clean the lampshade very well before applying any paint. Remove all dust or hair in the folds by using a dust cloth, microfiber cloth, Magic Eraser, or toothbrush.
- If you have a loud lamp shade and you want it to be lighter, use a spray primer so the paint coats will go on easily.
- Hang your lampshade on a box, so the lampshade isn’t touching anything on the table, garage floor, or whatever surface you are painting on. Everything will want to stick to it.
- Work in very even coats. It will take time for each coat to dry. Heavy spots will show, so work in even light coats and wait for it to dry in between. As a reference, this shade took me two days total.
- Don’t forget the underside of the shade. Painting the underside of the lampshade will filter light more evenly. When you’re painting the underside, be sure to double check and make sure you paint all of the spots.
I used Rust-Oleum spray paint in heirloom white [satin] for this creamy white color. I added it to my DIY section of my Amazon storefront.
Remember, every shade will be different and every material reacts differently. However, before you spend any money on a new shade or throw one out, give this a try.
