Ever since our post last week about our new dining room table chairs [here] I have been getting TONS of awesome questions about the large primitive furniture pieces in our dining room. I get it.. because I love it too. I spotted it at Heritage Trunk Co.’s booth right when we moved into the farmhouse & I KNEW I had to have it. I paid a pretty penny for it [worth it], drove a long ways to get it [worth it], & loaded & unloaded this heavy beast twice out of our trailer [worth it]. Some pieces are just worth it. It’s 6ftx8ft & is actually two pieces which is nice. There is markings all over it that say it was from “Grand Rapids Shoe Company” which is really cool since we love our hometown of Grand Rapids here in the mitten so much. All the paint & the glass is original which is a pretty rare find as well…
Seriously, every time I look at it I can’t believe it’s in our house. Our floors are still a little wonky so please excuse the paint stick shims we have under the piece to hold it up.. we keep it classy over here. I have started styling the piece a tad bit, but it’s been kind of a challenge to decorate around the construction. I have no plans to paint or do anything to this piece because it’s pretty perfect in my eyes. The doors & drawers function at like an 8 out of 10 which is great in my book for a primitive piece & I plan to store dining room items in the bottom half like napkins, tablecloths, & odds & ends like that. Other than being totally fantastic looking it will be a functional piece as well.
This has got to be one of my favorite finds of all time & it’s making the dining room become one of my favorite rooms of all time. Next up, change that light fixture & start decorating the room a little more. One day we will decide what we want to do with the floors & finish those, but we are loving them as is for now. What do you think of our primitive dining room hutch? Let me know in the comments below, find me on Facebook, & chat with me on Instagram. Hopefully I answered some of your questions. Thank you so much for stopping by the blog today! xx
Maybe a tad too primitive for my taste. But hey beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Absolutely love this piece! I always fall for the big ones too.
It’s such a storied hutch, you can just feel it.
The vibes are strong with this one 😉 hehe.
I can see why it called to you.
What a fabulous find!! I love the chippy white paint and the small drawers. . and, well. . just about everything else about the piece!! You are one very lucky lady to have found it/her!!
Liz, I’m IN LOVE with this hutch. Beautiful! xx
Gorgeous piece! I have a similar one but smaller. Please check for lead paint!
Oh my… it is perfection.
Your such an inspiration to me. I love your blog and style. Thank you for adding a bright spot to my day. It’s always exciting to see your posts. You may have already answered this, where did you get your dining room table? I’m sorry if this has already been answered and I missed it.
Love everything you do! We are restoring an 1893 farmhouse and I just bought a smaller, yet very similar piece for my kitchen! They just don’t make cabinets/hutches out of real wood like this anymore. I am going to leave the chippy paint on mine as well, but I’m thinking since they will be functioning as an actual part of my kitchen, I might need to use a matte varnish to keep the paint out of our food. Do you know of a good product for preserving a pitina like this? Thanks
Love Sara Jo
