Gold Paint! Oh my goodness I cannot believe a week has passed already since Thanksgiving and we are (too) quickly approaching December 1, YIKES! Breathe Liz-it’ll be okay! We finally received our Christmas tree today and will be putting that up tonight! With the holiday season in full swing, wasted time is not a luxury we all can spare during this season. If you’re like me…you are in full prep mode for the Christmas gatherings of friends and family, crossing off the shopping lists, and taking in the short window of cozy Christmas decor.
Even with all that, this little farm girl tries to squeeze any little extra trip out to the barn, walk with Winnie & the gang around the farm, and even try to knock out a DIY. We’ve been wanting to spray paint some lights that were not being used Gold… and while I was running some errands I popped into our local craft store for some Gold Spray Paint. In my head I am thinking picking out a Gold isn’t going to be too hard… It’s not like running to The Home Depot and being hit with a thousand different colors of white. Well, I was very wrong. Just like any other color, there is a variety of basic golds, hammered goals, tinted golds, and each brand of spray paint had a different take on what Gold was to them… I really wanted my golds to match throughout our home decor, while also trying to find the perfect Christmas gold for other holiday decor or Christmas DIYs. By the way…if you are looking for more Christmas Decor and Inspiration, click here [HERE].
I couldn’t pick one based on the color of the can and thought to myself other people have to have this issue too, right! So I took five home and spray painted some candlesticks in hopes of finding the perfect holiday gold!
The Lineup
- Design Masters Brilliant Gold
- Design Masters Gold Medal
- Krylon Premium 18K Gold
- Kryon Metallic Gold
- Rust-Oleum Metallic Pure Gold
Typically Rust-Oleum and Krylon spray paints are my go-to brands. I’ve sprayed a lot of stuff over the years and I have always been happy with both of their paints. For this little holiday DIY test run, I was sure one of those would have been the clear winner. When I was at Michaels, Design Masters caught my eye, and I threw it in the cart to give it try… I have never used them before and thought it was unique not to follow suit with displaying the paint color on the cap of the spray paint…
So for the test!
We sprayed these wood candlesticks we also bought at Michaels to be our test subjects & here is how they turned out!
Now there are some that turned out we definitely don’t like as much as others, but nonetheless, a cluster of gold is so beautiful on anything, am I right?
I was surprised to find my least favorite color on the candlesticks was the Rust-Oleum Metallic Pure Gold. It really pulled the metallic “glitter” or sheen, ultimately mating the overtone and color on the candlestick.
Next to the Rust-Oleum Metallic, we placed Kryon Premium 18K toward the bottom of the list. Not because of the quality and color… it was very beautiful. It had more of a Rose Gold-tone to it, but we expected to see that based on the cap color. This would be great for a blend of rose golds and light faux coppers. I can see this being used for a DIY for a little girl’s birthday party!
Our third favorite spray paint was the Kryon Metallic Gold. This is a great craft gold. It pulls gold out of a yellow base that is for sure. When you think of a kids gold or toy gold, this is a great choice.
Our second favorite spray paint, Design Masters Gold Medal. I know our go-to spray paints are already beating out and this new paint, Design Masters swept the two top spots on this test. The reason we didn’t choose this to be the top gold for us, was it looked like an authentic gold, but a new gold. Most of the golds in our home are shiny new, more of the slightly aged but not dull.
And the perfect gold for our home was the Design Masters Brilliant Gold. Using the golds found in our bedroom and kitchen Schoolhouse Electric lights, Brilliant Gold matched beautifully. We took to our old unused lights and took the oil-rubbed bronze to this brilliant gold! Currently, they are not wired in… but like a said before finding time to do stuff around this time of year is hard. So for now they are ornamental, and we are loving the look. When we get a little more time here on White Cottage Farm, we will wire them in & I think they will be the perfect touch to balance out our Schoolhouse electric pendant lights we have hanging over our island.

As always thank you for visiting the blog today and every other day, it means the world to us here on the farm. xx Liz Marie
Love this post. Golds are so hard! Design Masters Antique Gold is my absolute favorite spray paint of all time. It’s like aged brass. Totally gorgeous and looks great as a neutral gold option. I also really like to add a coat of silver glitter lightly over the gold for some extra holiday magic. 🙂
That is such a idea! I’m going to try that. 🙂
I’ve been using the Antique Gold Rub n Buff for frames and small things and that is just my favorite way to do it now! It looks so real and the sheen is perfect! These are all so pretty too and the scones look so great!
New to you! Loved the gold breakdown. Love your style
OH Yay! Thank you for reading and welcome to our blog!
Oh yes! The Rub and Buff are great too.
We will have to try that one out next!
Love this! Thanks Liz!
Thank you so much for doing this!!! I’ve messed around and wasted money buying cans of gold paint that didn’t work… I’ll be referring back to this for years to come! Thanks for saving me time and moola! ?
Wow good to know. I’ll be checking it out ?. Thanks, Liz.
Found the Design Masters a few years ago, when I painted over black Homegoods frames to do a gallery wall for my daughter. Love this paint!! And the one you chose is my favorite color too. ? I especially like its fine mist, which gives it something of a vermeil finish. So glad you found it too! Thanks for the comparison. It really helps to see the differences side by side.
Liz…I love that you said that about the Krylon and rose golds. I bought that one last fall for that exact reason! I used it with rose golds too!
Light looks fantastic! I just bought the rustoleum champagne gold & used it on a $ store mini Christmas tree! Exactly the vintage look I was going for!! Cant wait to decorate it!!
