I have an exciting farm update today for you guys! A lot of you have been asking for a quite a long time now if we were going to get chickens and guess what? We finally got some baby chicks here on white cottage farm! We set up a chicken coop in the garden and I guess you can call me the crazy chicken lady now…
Why Kind & Why
We ended up getting some guinea hens to start as recommended by some farm friends of ours who have them. We will most likely be adding be adding different varieties later on. Our guinea hens will be leaving the hen house and free ranging all over the farm soon once they get bigger and start doing their main job of eating ticks and bugs to help the insect population on our farm.
Coming Soon
We will be doing a full chicken coop tour later, but today I just wanted to introduce you to these little guys and welcome them to the farm. So far, Winnie & the rest of the gang have left the chickens alone and they have been living their best life. We picked up this chicken run from Tractor Supply Co. on sale. At first, I was convinced I was going to paint it white, but for now I’m actually enjoying the dark gray contrast in the garden. What do you think we should do? paint it or leave it?
I will give you a full tour of the chicken coop soon once we get it setup. For now there is some nesting boxes and of course just the normal dishes & such for water and food. Nothing special, but it’s a great home for the new members of our farm. I love how the coop looks next to the raised garden beds. You can read about the raised beds [HERE].
We are still loving our stock tank garden and this chicken coop just kind of tops the whole thing off. We still have a lot of stuff we want to do to the garden, but it’s becoming a charming little place to be especially with our new farmhouse chicken coop. I will do an update on our flower garden & vegetable garden very soon, but for now I just wanted to share this fun update with you guys! I hope you feel inspired in some small way by this post from the coop design to the garden beds and beyond. Thank you as always for stopping by the blog today & every other day to see what we are up to! Xx

Paint it white and cottage it up a little.
Hey Liz, love your coop! I think if you paint it white now it will eventually wear and become distressed over time and will look like it’s been there as long as your farmhouse. Of course it will do the same with the gray that it is now but let’s face it, white is what you do! Whatever you decide will be perfect I’m sure. ?
I like it gray. .I would leave it just like it is.
I vote to leave it gray! I like the contrast too and the darker backdrop for the flowers. They really stand out against the gray!
I love guineas!! You will love their feathers also when they molt. My favorite farm feathers! And they’ll run around your farm in a pack and make lots of noise… we had 2 dozen of them at one time and I miss them terribly. Although my son doesn’t miss them, said they messed up his garden too much.
As far as the chicken coop, I like it grey… but I’m always liking things a bit darker, so you do you! ?

Paint it white! It will pop next to the galvanized huge containers. You have a cute top on, do you remember where you purchased it? Thanks!
Hi Liz! They are also great “alarm” chickens?. They’ll start their most unusual clucking when someone shows up at your place. But you’re right, they will take care of any ticks you have?
I agree with painting it white so that when it distresses the grey will come through!
I think the chicken coop would be so cute painted green!
I think you intended your title to be what kind and why instead of what it says.
Très belles photos, Estetika Tour
We are thinking of getting Guinea hens, but I’m nervous about how much noise they make. You’ll have to let me know if the noise is bearable! I suppose the benefit of less ticks is worth the noise!
